Actress Rosie Lourde just gave us our next-level fitness obsession.

From Beyonce dance lessons to morning raves, exercise is no longer restricted to a simple session of cardio at the gym.

But the latest fitness hybrid takes the (gluten-free, dairy-free) cake.

Say hello to Aerial Yoga.

Brought to our attention by Starting From Now actress Rosie Lourde, it’s a modern, anti-gravitational take on yoga that can also incorporate elements of cardio and pilates.

One word: Impressive.

No, you don’t have to be a bonafide acrobat to do it and yes, we want to try it IMMEDIATELY.

The Aussie actress who now resides in the US went to AIR Aerial Fitness in LA, the city where the workout started gaining traction a few years ago.

The studio has several different classes that use the hammocks, ranging from a pilates-inspired ab classes to a high intensity workout combining conditioning, Pilates, ballet and HIIT – all while hanging upside down.

While the silky hammocks hanging from the ceiling look delicate, they’re very safe and are designed to support your full body weight.

As anyone who does yoga knows, the classes are far from a breeze and aerial yoga cranks the notch up even further.

A study done earlier this year by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that hybrid classes, like aerial yoga, offer a great workout.

“At the outset of the study, we didn’t necessarily anticipate that the physiological responses to aerial yoga would align with those of other, more traditional forms of cardio exercises, like cycling and swimming,” Lance Dalleck, Ph.D., an assistant professor of exercise and sport science at Western State Colorado University, told Shape.

Another major benefit of being off the ground during your workout (aside from the made-for-Instagram snap) is the effect on your abs.

This is because you'll lose your point of stability and start engaging your core without even realising it.

Aerial yoga also claims to improve circulation, reduce swelling, boost lymphatic drainage, detox organs and strengthen all areas of our body.

Fancy a hang?

Growing in popularity, you can find Aerial Yoga in most major Australian cities including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with many places offering introductory classes to ease you in.
