In 2005, Teresa Palmer was living in her “comfort bubble”, and loving it. She was living by the beach in Adelaide with her boyfriend and her dogs, surrounded by friends and family. It was a simple and lovely lifestyle.
Yet Palmer couldn’t quite shake her dream of being a Hollywood actor, even though it felt distant and unattainable.
“I realised there was a part of myself I was suppressing, and that was my creativity,” she explains in the latest episode of her Tez Talks series.
“There was this little niggling itch, almost like a constant little tap on my shoulder, and I couldn’t ignore it. It was this acting thing.”
So in 2005, when she was 20 years old, the Point Break star took the plunge. She moved to the US, and while it wasn’t easy at first she’s never looked back.
“It was the most liberating thing for me. It was so scary,” she recalls.
That’s a rather dramatic way to escape one’s comfort zone, but there are some great lessons we can all take away from Palmer’s experience.
Here, she explains that while we’re programmed to stay in our familiar ‘bubbles’ when something feels scary or unattainable, there’s so much to learn and achieve by jumping in the deep end — even if it feels uncomfortable.
Have you ever consciously jumped out of your comfort zone? How did it feel?
