Cade shared photos of his severe sunburn and a lot of people are very confused.

Cade Huckabay, a man from Beaumont, southern Texas, shared an image of his face following the worst sunburn of his life.

The picture quickly went viral with more than 100,000 retweets, and many sharing their own cases of excruciating sunburn.

But it wasn’t just that Huckabay’s face was red, bordering on purple.

His forehead, well, had a dent in it.

Huckabay had recently shaved his head and therefore the skin was particularly sensitive to the sun. He was mowing a field for a number of hours, without wearing any sunscreen.

The result was sunburn so severe his head actually swelled. If he pressed into his forehead, a dent would remain for a number of minutes.

Huckabay told Buzzfeed News the swelling lasted for about “four to five days,” and he used ice and Advil in an attempt to reduce the symptoms.

Australian GP Brad McKay said although this reaction is unusual, it absolutely happens.

“The harmful effects of sunburn, bee stings, insect bites, or infection with activate the body’s immune system and cause localised fluid retention,” he told Buzzfeed News. 

“In extreme cases this leads to spectacularly swollen skin.”

It is likely Huckabay’s burn escalated to sun poisoning, the symptoms of which are: swelling, nausea, fever, headache, small blisters and dizziness.

The process of itching and peeling does not begin until the sunburn has started to heal, which takes at least a few days.

If sun poisoning has reached the point of a high temperature, vomiting or acute pain, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Sun poisoning can otherwise be treated by having a cool bath, taking paracetamol, and staying well hydrated.

And, of course, wear goddamn sunscreen.

According to Cancer Research UK, getting sunburnt even just once every two years makes you three times more likely to develop skin cancer.

Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, which is one of the highest rates in the world.
