We all remember that tear-jerk moment from The King’s Speech when King George VI (Colin Firth) overcomes his stammer with the help of Aussie Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) and gives his inspirational WWII radio address to the people of Britain.
Fast-forward to the modern day, and you’ll find yourself being brought to tears again by the touching story of Musharaf Asghar.
Musharaf Asghar doesn’t have much in common with King George VI. For starters, he’s not a monarch, nor is he leading a superpower nation into a major war.
He does, however, suffer from the same debilitating stutter. And like King George VI, Musharaf Asghar overcame his stutter with the help of one unassuming guardian angel- his English teacher, Mr Burton.
Inspired by the true story of The King’s Speech, Mr Burton used the same technique shown in the film- having headphones over your ears and playing soft music whilst speaking- to have Asghar successfully deliver a 10 minute oral presentation to 200 fellow class mates that brought them all (and us) to tears.
“I won’t forget that moment for the rest of my life,” stated Mr Burton.
Thanks to the efforts of Mr Burton, Musharaf Asghar believes that his speech has improved by 80%, and hopes to soon go to uni.
