So we spoke to Chloe de Winter, physiotherapist and founder of Go Chlo Pilates who promised to help us understand what lower back pain is and how to fix it.

Recovery, here we come!

Okay, so what causes lower back pain?

First and foremost, Chloe wants us to know that lower back pain can be caused by many different things and it's always worth consulting a doctor or physiotherapist for advice on your own personal experience.

That being said, there are a few things to know about lower back pain that can get you on the road to resolving it.

"Lower back pain is multifactorial, so the causes of low back pain are multifactorial, and it's usually a result of many different factors that impact it including emotional, social and physical factors," Chloe said.

"Two identical physical injuries are experienced differently by two people and while there are many injuries to the low back with things like disc bulges, facet joints, and muscle spasm, our experience of pain is not always in direct correlation to that injury."

So what can you do to help?

Depending on the severity of your back pain, strength training through Pilates can help with recovery, as Chloe explains.

"Physically, Pilates will cause changes in muscular strength, flexibility and endurance which can help support the muscles of the low back.

"So by building strength through the core muscles through the glute muscles, you can really have big impacts on the way people move and how they experience movement and pain in their bodies."

But that's not all! You'll also get an added benefit of improving your mental wellbeing. And that, in turn, will have a positive impact on your back pain.

"In Pilates, we really connect movement to breath, people practice mindful movement and really enjoy being present in the moment.

"That can have incredible impacts of someone's experience of pain all the current evidence is overwhelmingly positive when it comes to strength exercises for the treatment of lower back pain.

"In fact, exercising two to three times a week will actually reduce your risk of low back pain."

For a quick fix, Chloe suggests changing your desk set up to prioritise posture, meditation, but most importantly, seeing a Physiotherapist and or specialist for a personalised plan.
