Australian Faith Ward is the newest Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. But one detail sets her apart.

For the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, presentation is just as important as performance.

The impeccable blue and white outfits are arguably the most famous in the NFL, with their iconic mini shorts and star-studded belt accompanied by full glam and big, bouncy curls.

The uniform makes the DCC, well, the DCC.

So, when 22-year-old rookie Faith Ward — the third Australian and first New Zealander to make the team — started sporting a ponytail in training, everyone immediately took note.

DCC fans flooded Faith's comments section on social media with one question: why?

"Just wondering why you wear your hair up in a ponytail as a DCC? I thought it was a requirement to have it [out] at practice," one person asked.

"Why do you get to wear your hair however you want?????????????," a second said.

Another commenter added: "I can't! What's more iconic, you being an Aussie/NZ queen or the fact you're wearing a ponytail!!"

It's clearly the question many have been dying to know the answer to. And now, Faith has finally fessed up.

Speaking to ABC News on Monday, the 22-year-old dancer said she knows she's breaking the long-standing tradition of sporting voluminous curls.

"It's crazy because, obviously, the DCC hairstyle is out, fluffy, voluminous, luscious, long locks. I've broken that stereotype," she said.

Faith shared it was actually DCC director, Kelli Finglass who realised an updo suited her best.

"I'm in rehearsal one of the days with my hair out and I am, you know, sweating after doing 'Thunderstruck'," Faith recalled.

"She's looking at me and she's like, 'You know what? I really want to see what your hair would look like tied up.'"

So, of course, Faith put her hair up — and not only did she nail her choreography, Kelli was a fan of the slicked-back do.

"She really liked the way it danced, which was really cool because I was super excited about that," the rookie told ABC.

"Your girl doesn't want to have her hair out, sweaty in her face (while) dancing."

Faith continued: "I go into uniform fittings and keep my hair up in hopes that she would like it still, and I walk in, and she goes, 'You're giving Ariana Grande! We need an Ariana Grande moment on the team."

She couldn't quite believe it.

"Are you serious right now, Kelli? Like this is so exciting!" Faith said in the moment.

"She's like, 'Yeah, but I want your ponytail longer, I want it blonder, and then I want to see a cameo day, where I prefer you to be with your hair out."

But, Aussies, let's not get our hopes up yet.

Faith said nothing is set in stone just yet. It's up to Kelli to make the final call.

"Right now, it's looking very hopeful that I will be a DCC with a ponytail," Faith said. "But, we still have to keep an open mind to the possibility that I could be going back to hair out. So, we can't get too excited yet!"

Faith, who was born in Wellington and raised in Western Australia, said she tried out for the team after a recruiter messaged her on Instagram.

"I was like, 'This is a fake account, this is a drill, there's no way this is happening'," she told ABC.

"And (the recruiter) was like, 'No, we're looking for international candidates'."

We all know from watching Netflix's America's Sweethearts that tryouts are brutal. Rookies go up against seasoned veterans in a gruelling audition process, all competing for an elusive spot in the team.

Faith "couldn't believe it" when she discovered she'd made the team.

"So beyond grateful and blessed to turn my biggest dream into a reality," she wrote on Instagram.

"This journey has been incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally, but I wouldn't change a thing! I've been pushed in ways I never imagined, I've learned and grown so much already.

"I'm excited to see where this wild ride takes me! I feel so privileged to stand alongside not only the most talented dancers but also some of the most amazing women I've ever met."

Faith continued: "This year is going to be the best yet, and I can't wait to share it with my new family of sisters!"

The cheerleaders are currently training for the NFL season, which kicks off in September.

We can't wait to see what's in store for our Aussie star.
