'This one $41 product means I'll never buy tampons again.'

Periods are bloody hard work (pun intended). Yes, cramps are bad enough, but I'm talking logistics here.

The sheer mental load that comes with managing a period using disposables is exhausting. It's not just the bleed itself; it's the non-stop admin.

The stress of checking your bag to make sure you have enough tampons or pads. The panic when you realise you didn't pack enough, with no one to ask for a spare, forcing a clumsy toilet paper fix you just know won't hold.

The awkward shuffle when there's no bin, wrapping it up and either hunting for one or stashing it in your bag until you can ditch it.

Then there's the environmental guilt of adding yet another single-use plastic applicator or wrapper to the rubbish bin, cycle after cycle, year after year.

It's a tough gig, and I was desperate for a solution that was kinder to my body, my brain and the planet.

As someone who will do anything to simplify life, I knew the AWWA Tencel Boxer Brief ($41) was calling my name.

Comfy period undies that take the admin out of bleeding? Say less.

I had to find out if this one simple swap could truly replace my need for disposables. And boy, do I have thoughts.

How do they work?

The briefs are made from buttery-soft Tencel Modal — a sustainable fibre sourced from the wood pulp of sustainably managed beech trees. It's designed with an innovative, multi-layer technology that makes it leakproof and breathable, offering comfort without any of the bulk you might expect.

But the real kicker for me was the practicality: each pair holds up to two regular tampons' worth of fluid and is completely machine washable.

For anyone wanting to make the switch, AAWA is running a buy five, get five offer through to the end of November across their whole range, making it the perfect opportunity to build your period underwear collection.

Offered in grey or black, the undies cover you for light spotting through to heavy periods. And if the boxer brief cut isn't your style, there are plenty of other options to choose from.

My honest review.

I have to admit, I was shocked by how comfy the boxer brief is. It genuinely feels buttery soft, making it easy to wear for hours, lounging at home or while on the go.

The fit is fantastic — a mid-rise, slightly longer leg that's incredibly gentle against the skin, which is exactly what you want when you're feeling a bit bloated.

One of my main concerns was that it might look a bit like a nappy, which is not what you want when you're dressing to face the day, but it was surprisingly sleek — a major win in my books.

For the rest of the day, I went about my normal routine and felt comfy and stylish. I wore the briefs under a maxi skirt and later under some jeans, and you couldn't even tell — no bulky undies in sight!

The true test, of course, was the protection. We are not about leakage in this house.

I felt completely secure wearing the briefs. The leakproof core felt reliable, and the breathable fabric meant I felt dry and fresh all day long.

When I finally changed and tossed them into the washing machine (a cold cycle and a gentle detergent are all they need!), I realised I hadn't once thought about packing a spare tampon or having to find a bin for a wrapper. It was easy, stress-free and comfortable — exactly how a period should be.

The final verdict.

After trialling the AWWA Tencel Boxer Brief, my verdict is a resounding yes. The brief is comfortable, reliable and seriously soft, all while being genuinely better for the planet. It's hard to imagine going back to the old way of disposable products.

Of course, I'll always keep an emergency tampon on hand — you never know when your period might strike — but for everyday wear, these have become my new go-to.
