If there's one style of top you're going to see in all the shops for summer, it's the lace-trim camisole.

The cult piece first appeared as a micro-trend at Copenhagen Fashion Week, where we spotted a handful of influencers and attendees styling slip-inspired tops in different ways.

Some had a lace accent peeking through under a blazer, or a tunic over wide-leg pants (oh, those Scandi girls know how to layer.)

Mamamia's Head of Content and former Vogue Scandinavia editor Eliza Sorman Nilsson just got back from Sweden (which everyone agrees is the epicentre of trends) and said lace slips were hanging from racks in every store she walked into in Stockholm – whether it was high-end or high street.

"A friend who edits Vogue Scandinavia turned up to dinner wearing a cream lace slip by Copenhagen brand Tus Studio. She paired it with a faux fur coat; right then and there, I knew this was the dress of the season," she told me.

"What's great about getting [this style] now is you'll have it for summer, but also can pair it with blazers and over trousers come next autumn. You can also see that brands are playing with this lingerie aesthetic not just in dresses, but in slinky tops and shorts that would normally be reserved for the bedroom."

Now, this sexy top is fast emerging as summer's cool-girl uniform. But how do you wear one without feeling like you've left the house in a nightie?

Much like the booming trend for silk scarves and bandanas, a hint of lace is a fun way to add texture and dimension to your look, whether you wear it as a standalone top or pair it with contrasting pieces.

A style that's cut on the bias will give you that chic asymmetrical effect, while a lace-trim minidress offers more coverage and the same layering options. (Didn't you hear? Dresses over pants are so back.)

Pairing a camisole dress over flowy pants is looking like this season's most effortless outfit combo when it comes to event dressing.

Melbourne stylist and Mamamia contributor Emelia Morris shared a recent post showing five ways she's wearing this Zara cami dress, spanning dressy looks and more casual ones.

"Your pieces should work hard for you," Morris explained of her versatile styling choices.

"Play with layers, textures, proportions [and] accessories and you'll get way more wear out of every piece in your wardrobe."

If you're slightly fearful of looking like you're wearing a négligée (or you're just not a fan of strappy tops), follow Emelia's lead and layer a boxy t-shirt over the top.

The lace trim is a clever way to elevate the most basic pieces in your wardrobe and give them a new lease of life.

Sydney fashion editor Fifi Milne provided more inspo on her Instagram, sharing how she's incorporating the trend into her daily looks.
