1. British teen arrested over alleged Melbourne terror attack plan

A British teen has been arrested in the UK in connection with an alleged Islamic State-inspired plan to attack Melbourne.

The ABC reports the 14-year-old was arrested on Saturday “on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism and remains in police custody for questioning,” according to Greater Manchester Police in north-west England.

Victoria Police said investigators “received information from UK authorities after they allegedly uncovered communications between the teenager and a man in Australia”.

“Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police can confirm a link between the arrest of a 14-year-old boy in Blackburn, Lancashire in the United Kingdom on Saturday with Operation Rising, a Joint Counter Terrorism Team operation,” the police statement said.

“The nature of the communication will form part of the investigation and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

It follows the arrest of five teenagers in Melbourne after police uncovered an alleged plot to target officers at the city’s Anzac Day events.

2. Study: More girls suffering anxiety due to social media.

A new report has suggested more young women are suffering anxiety and depression thanks to images on social media.

Daily Mail reports the survey found girls between the ages of 11 and 13 are more likely to worry, lack confidence or feel nervous than they were five years ago.

The study conducted by the University College London and published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, surveyed more than 1,600 pupils in gradess 7 and 8 in 2009 and 2014.

The results returned an increase in girls suffering emotional issues, which rose from 13 per cent to 20 per cent between 2009-2014.

While the study’s co-author, Dr Miranda Wolpert, could not definitively conclude the reason behind increasing emotional stress felt by girls in this age group, she said they included “increasing stresses on girls and young women, ranging from academic pressure to their increasing sexualisation and objectification amplified by social media.”

3. United Nations and Pope call for action after refugee boat tragedy.

Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have called for action after a boat carrying more than 700 refugees capsized in the Mediterranean today.

The United Nations estimates more than 700 people were killed, with only 28 survivors counted so far.

“It seems we are looking at the worst massacre ever seen in the Mediterranean,” UNHCR spokeswoman Carlotta Sami said.

ABC News reports Pope Francis called for united action to prevent these tragedies.

“These are men and women like us, brothers seeking a better life,” he said in his weekly address, and urged leaders to “act decisively and quickly to stop these tragedies from recurring”.

Meanwhile a spokesman for Ban Ki-moon appealed to the international community for “solidarity and burden-sharing in the face of this crisis.”

He also implored governments to recognise the right of asylum.

4. Aboriginal passport refused in Brisbane.

An Aboriginal sovereignty campaigned was “hassled” by customs officers at Brisbane International Airport when he tried to re-enter Australia on an Aboriginal passport.

Callum Clayton-Dixon is the chairperson of the Aboriginal Provision Government — a group which fights for Aboriginal sovereignty.

Mr Clayton-Dixon was questioned for approximately 30 minutes before being confirmed as an Australian citizen.

SBS reports several hundred of the passports have been issues since 1990.

5. Melanoma drug found to reduce effects of cancer.

Doctors are thrilled with the results of a new study that shows more patients with advanced melanoma lived longer and had fewer side effects when given a new drug.

More than 70 per cent of patients given the newer treatment, Keytruda, lived for one year more than predicted, whereas only 58 per cent of those on Yervoy lived an extra year.

Associate Professor Georgina Long from the Melanoma Institute of Australia said it was a groundbreaking development for melanoma patients.

“The results are world-first, where two effective immunotherapies are directly compared, and we significantly improve outcomes for patients even further,” she told ABC News.

“This really is important as this new drug works much better. To show such a large improvement is outstanding.”

Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world, with an Australian dying from the disease every six hours.

6. Game of Thrones pirates receive warnings.

The creators of Game of Thrones are pursuing pirates who torrented the the infamously leaked episodes from the show’s fifth series.

Fairfax reports BitTorrent users are receiving letters from HBO, warning them to take down episodes they may have shared online. A Canadian Reddit user posted an example of the letter he received.

Legal action is not yet being taken, due in part to the impossible task of pegging down an individual user via an ISP address.

7. Couple sues sperm bank after being deceived about donor profile.

A lesbian couple has taken legal action against a sperm bank after a donor they were lead to believe was a PhD holder, was actually a mentally ill criminal.

Last year, seven years after the couple welcomed their child, they received emails from the sperm bank containing the donor’s name.

After looking into the person, the couple found he was a schizophrenic who dropped out of college and had been arrested for burglary.

Furthermore, the image they received alongside the donor profile had been altered to remove a mole.

The couple filed a lawsuit against the sperm bank on March 31.
