The 5 affordable finds that will upgrade your work wardrobe now.

We've all fallen into the trap of buying outfits *just* for special occasions, like a girls' brunch or weekend away. When the motivation is there, we strike. And we end up with pieces that bring us maximum joy — but minimum return on cost-per-wear.

However when it comes to workwear, many of us avoid dedicating the time and money to what is actually the most-worn segment of our closet. That's why we end up trying to sub in linen pants for some decent trousers, knowing full well it's not exactly giving corporate.

Watch: How many outfits can we make with 9 staple pieces? Post continues below.

Mamamia.

There's an art to finding pieces that will re-energise as well as stabilise your work wardrobe, so you don't feel like you need to duck out to Zara for a new shirt every other week. That said, it doesn't have to cost a lot to build your 9-5 capsule, either.

Here are the five affordable finds that will upgrade your work wardrobe now, and last for seasons to come.

Draped basics.

Plain tops and tank dresses always have their place, but if your go-to basics are starting to feel overworn or dated, it might be time to rethink the silhouettes.

Right now we're seeing lots of options with twists, folds and asymmetrical details that add visual interest to classic cuts, without going too out-of-the-box. You'll be amazed what a statement neckline can do for your confidence in a Zoom call or meeting.

Consider adding a ruched tank top or draped column dress to your line-up.

Business shirts are no longer just for the boys — the style has had a chic makeover and plenty of crisp options are hitting the high street.

I love a roomy shirt with structure because it's versatile enough to be worn half-tucked-into a midiskirt, layered over cigarette pants or paired with tailored shorts. And bonus — the style can easily convert to weekend-wear too. Just add jeans.

An updated blazer.

My favourite workwear staple to purchase is a new blazer; it's always the item I get the most repeat-wear out of, so I make sure to add to my collection every year with a fresh shade and shape — like the chocolate brown Target blazer I snapped up for $60 last year.

The trends I'm loving that will stick around through 2025 are suiting-inspired options with outsized proportions, especially in grey or pinstripes, and sculptural jackets in neutral shades that keep the emphasis on the waist.

Blazers are one of those staples you can absolutely shop affordably — my go-to tan blazer is from H&M and has given me years of loyal wear, and it's the piece in my wardrobe I get asked about the most.

Minimal loafers.

If there's one footwear style you're about to see all over your feed for winter, it's the loafer. Thanks to mega brands like Gucci and Miu Miu, the old-school driving shoe has had a runway resurgence with slimline leather and suede versions coming through this season. So if you're looking to replace your pumps or summer sandals with something timelier, this style might be the ticket.

While I don't advocate for buying cheap shoes and hoping to get years of lasting wear, these options come in at $150 and under.

Slouchy pants.

Work pants are one of the more boring items to shop for, I get that. But we often set our sights on finding what we think are the "perfect" pair of all-rounders, like tapered black suit pants, rather than leaning into new silhouettes that can actually transform our existing staple pieces.

A relaxed wide-leg pant is going to give you so much more mileage this year, especially in an unexpected colour like cream or khaki. The slouchy style is easy to layer in winter too, with everything from shirting to chunky knits and trench coats.
