Exactly what to wear to your work Christmas party, according to a fashion editor.

When you've got a desk job, it's hard enough to find an outfit to wear to work every day — let alone the one you choose for the office Christmas party.

It's often the single day of the year where you're officially permitted to log off early, make merry with your colleagues and take advantage of the open bar.

The challenge is finding an outfit that toes the line between what's appropriate, but still fun and festive.

Of course, that will vary depending on your general office dress guidelines and the industry you work in.

What we wear to the Mamamia party might be a little more casual than a gathering of high court judges and barristers, for example. But then, I don't know what judges wear to let their, er, wigs down.

SO. The first thing to do is to ask HR about the dress code.

Right, no awkward dress-up theme? Excellent! You have options.

Here are my three outfit suggestions, plus where you can shop them.

Outfit 1: A statement set.

When you're keen to make an impression but retain that sense of desk-side comfort, there's no better option than a bold matching set.

Statement co-ords are everywhere this summer, and the great thing is they do most of the styling work for you.

Choose from colourful resort prints or monochrome motifs, splashed across collared shirts, tunics and wide-leg pants.

These pieces look awesome with chunky beaded jewels and metallic heels, but you can also strip it right back with your accessories and let the set do the talking.

Outfit 2: A glittering midiskirt and structured top.

This is a really on-trend outfit you'll feel relaxed in, but still party-ready.

What I love about this combo is that it gives a nod to a corporate silhouette, only with some sparkle.

We're seeing lots of statement midiskirts in sequins and pailettes, some with sheer panels or lace, hitting the market ahead of the holidays. And while the skirt is supposed to be extra, the structured top, which sits away from the body, pares it right back.

Don't be afraid to have fun with the look and amp up your accessories, like a textured bag and crystal drop earrings. Eye-catching pieces are great conversation starters…

Outfit 3: A minimal maxidress.

When you don't want to overthink your look, but still want to feel chic and polished, an elevated maxidress is the answer.

Best served in soft shades and neutrals, or simple prints like stripes and polka dots, the beauty of this piece is in its throw-on-and-go ease. It's the perfect option for a more laidback event or a sunset bash held outdoors.

Just add sleek sunglasses, simple flats and sculptural gold jewellery for a touch of extra glamour.
