Pakistani teenager survives honour killing

An 18-year-old woman has survived an honour killing in Punjab Province, Pakistan. Saba Maqsood was shot twice and thrown into a canal for marrying a man without her family’s permission. A police official in the province told Reuters that the attack was an “honour-related” incident. Maqsood is currently being treated in hospital.

Boko Haram slaughtered over 200, say civilians

Nigerian civilians are alleging that Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram have been dressing up as Nigerian soldiers, and going on mass killing sprees. The civilians, from the Gwoza district, allege that at least 200 people were killed in three separate communities on Wednesday. The attack occurred after calls for the Nigerian government to send military support to the region.

Clive Palmer calls for Premier Newman to be “thrown in jail”

Clive Palmer has said that he is not worried about recent allegations that he bought State MPs to start his own party, although he does think that Queensland Premier Campbell Newman should be reprimanded for failing to report them. Speaking in response to the allegations made by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney, Palmer told ABC Radio today: “The premier was supposed to be the tier law officer of the state, and if the premier heard [the allegation] he has an obligation to report it to the police, and the CMC.”

“The fact that he hasn’t done so means that he has committed a criminal offence as well, as should be thrown in jail. And this is not the end of things.”

Former Australian tennis champion Bob Hewitt charged with child rape

Former Australian doubles tennis champion Bob Hewitt has been charged with the rape and sexual assault of girls he coached in South Africa 30 years ago. The three women are bringing charges on the basis of alleged attacks that occurred in 1981, 1982 and 1994.

Mr Hewitt won nine grand slam doubles and six mixed doubles titles in the 1960s and 1970s. The case will go to trial in February.

US President Barack Obama has copped criticism on Twitter overnight, after being spotted chewing gum during D-Day memorial ceremonies in France. Obama faced similar criticism after he was shown chewing gum on the telecast of Nelson Mandela’s funeral in December.

Norway sees major spike in tourism thanks to Disney’s Frozen

Frozen brings tourism to Norway.

Norwegian tourism has seen a 40 per cent spike following the release of Disney’s Frozen. While Frozen may be set in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle, that kingdom is located in amongst the fjords, which has led many fans to believe the story takes place in Norway. Visit Norway has been in a marketing partnership with Disney since the film’s release late last year.

Colorado to establish the world’s first ‘pot bank’

The US state of Colorado has passed a law approving the world’s first ‘pot bank’. Alas, it is not a bank which trades in cannabis, but a bank exclusively for weed businesses, who have been struggling to find banks willing to take them on as customers after Colorado legalised marijuana at the start of the year, forcing them to deal exclusively in cash.
