Pet owners get it. When you’re sick, there are few remedies quite like a snuggle from your furry friend.
So when US women Shelby Hennick’s grandmother was hospitalised following a bad reaction to medication, she knew there was one visitor she had to bring along.
Hospital rules be damned.
In a tweet that’s been shared more than 131,000 times, the 21-year-old veterinarian technician revealed how she managed to get the woman’s dog, Patsy, in undetected.
“My grandma is in the hospital right now and wanted to see her dog,” she wrote.
“So I made it look like I was carrying a baby and we made it.”
Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Hennick said it was actually her mum’s idea to reunite Grandma Dona with her beloved pooch.
“I just happened to be passing my grandma’s house when she called, so of course I was gonna do it,” she said.
Hennick said all it took was a carefully arranged blanket and a nonchalant wave to make it past hospital staff.
Hennick said the covert visit was a beautiful surprise for her Grandma, who has had a "pretty strong bond" with Patsy over the last 13 years.
"I was really happy we were able to pull it off, and I'm sure it made her day," she said.
In order to minimise the risk of infection for patients, service animals are generally the only pets allowed into hospitals.
But Hennick's story has unearthed a litany of people who have done some sneaky pet smuggling of their own.
