Wippa's parenting nightmare: "My toddler has fallen a metre off the edge of the stairs."

When one of your kids takes a fall, when you hear that sickening “thud”, it’s almost a comfort when they start to cry. But when your child is only two and landed on their head, a trip to the hospital is always a wise move.

Radio host Michael “Wippa” Wipfli has described how his two-year-old son Ted felt dazed after falling on his head, prompting he and wife Lisa to drive him to the local children’s hospital.

Wippa told co-host Ryan Fitzgerald on their Nova 96.9 breakfast show “Fitzy & Wippa” how Ted had fallen on the stairs during a night he described as a “shocker”.

“So I’m upstairs with Jack. We’ve just had a bath. This was after dinner last night. And all of a sudden I hear this thud. And I’m thinking, Please don’t be a human. Don’t let that noise be a human. And then I hear tears.”

“Ted has fallen a metre off the edge of the stairs.”

Wippa said there’s a platform in his home that he built onto the stairs to protect the kids from falling but it wasn’t in place.

“But the thing is at that age – he’s two – he’s got no fear. So if there’s stairs he’ll just run at a hundred miles an hour and forget the stairs are there. Like there’s just no stopping him. He’s completely mad.”

No wonder Wippa regularly describes being a parent of two young children like “trying to stop a couple of monkeys killing themselves”.

Luckily Ted is totally fine.

In true proud-dad style Wippa said the highlight of the night (aside from his son being declared uninjured and able to go home) was when he said his name for the first time.

The father-of-two described the doctor coming into the cubicle in emergency and saying, "Hello, what's your name?" and Ted said, "Ted!" The radio host had been trying to teach Ted how to say his own name every night during bath time.

Wippa and wife Lisa have been married since 2013 and have two children - Ted and eight-month-old Jack.

You can listen to "Fitzy and Wippa" each morning from 6-9 on Nova 96.9.
