This lesser-known destination is the ultimate winter getaway, and it’s just 40 minutes from Brisbane.

When it comes to winter escapes, I'm not the type to build snowmen or strap on skis.

I don't love the cold, the cozzie livs crunch is still very real and with kids of all different ages, I'm always looking for something easy, affordable and genuinely fun.

Fresh air? Yes. Sunshine? Always. A bit of adventure that doesn't require five hours of planning or sitting in traffic? Absolutely.

Last winter, I found exactly that — less than an hour from Brisbane City and just 20 minutes from my own home.

Redlands Coast is close enough for a quick day trip, relaxed enough to feel like a real break and packed with things to do — whether you're going solo, escaping as a couple or adventuring with the kids.

Here's why it should be at the top of your list for a winter getaway.

Getting there is a breeze (and it won't break the bank).

One of the best things about Redlands Coast is how easy — and affordable — it is to get around. If you're a local Brissie girl like me, you can jump on a train and be in Cleveland for just 50 cents (yes, really).

Once you're there, you've got options: Explore the cute coastal town of Cleveland on foot or make your way to Victoria Point where you can hop on a 50-cent ferry to Coochiemudlo Island (only 10 minutes away). You could also head a little further to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

And if North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is calling your name, good news — the island's buses are also just 50 cents and you don't need a 4WD to explore. Your regular car will do just fine.

Tracks and trails for days.

If your idea of a winter getaway involves stretching your legs and filling your lungs with fresh air, Redlands Coast has you covered.

The area is packed with trails that wind through bushland, hug the coastline or meander through local villages. Whether you're keen to explore North Stradbroke Island via the scenic trails of Naree Budjong Djara National Park or hit the bushwalking and mountain biking tracks at Redlands Track Park, there's plenty of options.

Spots you won't want to miss.

If you've got a full day or weekend to spare, here are a few locations that deserve a place on your itinerary:

North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)

It's the world's second-largest sand island and feels like a full reset for the soul. Think white sandy beaches, 4x4 sand safaris (if you're into that), epic surf and one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the country at Point Lookout.

And don't miss a dip at Brown Lake or a lazy afternoon at Cylinder Beach (ranked one of the top 10 beaches in Australia).

Coochiemudlo Island

A sweet little island that feels like stepping back in time. It's quiet, it's peaceful and it's only 10 minutes by ferry from Victoria Point.

Raby Bay Harbour and Foreshore

Whether you're into sunset views or paddling around on a waterbike, this spot is made for laid-back afternoons. There's a dog-friendly beach, hire options for kayaks and paddleboards, fresh seafood, harbour cruises and waterfront restaurants that make you feel like you're on holiday.

King Island Walk

If you time it right with the tides, you can walk across a sandbar to this little island. It's a fun, unique experience the kids (or your inner child) will love.

Wildlife that puts on a show.

Redlands Coast is a dream for wildlife lovers. During whale season, head to Point Lookout on Minjerribah and you'll have a front-row seat — no boat or binoculars required.

Dugongs are often spotted around Raby Bay Foreshore (especially if you're out on the water) and if you keep your eyes peeled, you might spot turtles, birds in their natural habitat, kangaroos, koalas or even a cheeky kookaburra or two on land.

It's one of the few places where you genuinely feel surrounded by nature.

Eat, sip and soak up the culture.

Of course, no winter escape is complete without good food.

On Minjerribah alone, you'll find everything from beachside fish and chips to beautifully curated dining experiences that showcase local seafood and native ingredients.

Back on the mainland, wander the weekend markets for fresh produce and artisan treats or check out local attractions like the Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) or IndigiScapes. Here, you can learn about local plants, sustainability and immerse yourself in Quandamooka culture.

You can have any type of holiday.

If you're after a winter escape that's close to home yet feels like a real getaway, Redlands Coast is hard to beat.

It offers a mix of calming moments and unexpected adventures — the kind of place where you can do a lot or very little, and both feel just right. It's affordable, easy to reach and full of reasons to come back again and again.
