Wicked has certainly taken over the internet in the past few weeks. With its recent release on November 22, fans have been belting the songs out loud for all to hear. Yes, we're loving the singalongs.
Wicked is an origin story, of sorts, for the classic tale The Wizard of Oz. While many recognise Wicked as a Broadway musical, it might come as a surprise to some that it originated from Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name.
The book draws inspiration from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, first published in 1900 and famously adapted into the beloved 1939 film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.
So to oversimplify things, the new film is basically an adaptation of an adaptation of a fan-fiction of an alternate side of The Wizard of Oz.

While some have been calling Wicked a prequel, it's not entirely the case.
While some parts of Wicked happen years before the events of The Wizard of Oz, other parts occur concurrently.
