'Cancel her already.' Why everyone is talking about Bobbi Althoff.

Right now, everyone is talking about Bobbi Althoff.

The mumfluencer-turned-comedy podcast host has had her time in the spotlight for the past four months, and right now, she's one of the most polarising podcasters making waves.

Since launching The Really Good podcast in 2021, the 26-year-old has managed to nab A-list interviews with Drake, Mark Cuban, Tyga, Lil Yachty and others, in a short amount of time. 

But what was once considered a hilarious shtick by Althoff has now turned into a point of contention with her audience. 

She became popular for her niche interview style. It involved not really interviewing her guests by speaking in a low, quiet voice. 

She offered sarcastic questions and responses and instigated uncomfortable conversations and situations. 

Basically, Althoff's goal was to make the podcast episode as awkward as possible.

And it worked — really, really well. Her first interview with YouTuber Colleen Ballinger went viral and so did her second episode when she welcomed Undateable actor Rick Glassman.

 The virality of the clips led her to her famous interview yet... Drake.

Her journey to internet stardom didn't begin with awkward podcast episodes, but with social media offerings about her pregnancy journey and life as a married mother of two.

Her original account, @bobbialthon, which has more than 1.2 million followers (it has since been set to private), was once used to post video blogs about her life as a mum. It wasn't until early 2022 that she made a completely new TikTok account and announced she would be turning to full-time comedy.

There were definitely hints that she had a talent for entertaining people, even when discussing her children. While we can't see many of the videos that put her on the map any longer, there are a few floating around. In one clip, she shares she doesn't believe in allowing babies to crawl. 

In another, she announces her daughter's name is "Richard". In a third clip, she reveals she apparently named her second child "Concrete". These might have been jokes, but her tone confused viewers and thus ensured they kept coming back day after day.

The Really Good Podcast has only had a handful of guests so far since launching in April 2023, with her first guest being Colleen Ballinger, who has faced criticism this year after former fans accused her of having an inappropriate relationship with them whilst they were underage. Ballinger faced the wrath of the internet, while Althoff basked in its glory.

Her next guest, Glassman, responded less than favourably to her deadpan interviewing style. As a result, her videos with the actor also blew up on social media.

"There’s no prep, and that’s the fun of it," she previously told Cosmopolitan of her podcast. "I think that’s why celebrities are down to do it. They know it’s a character, and we just wing it. It’s not a real interview. I’m not trying to get hard-hitting information about you — I’m not trying to uncover anything. It’s just a conversation. It’s really a parody of a good interview."

A few interviews later, she landed the opportunity to chat with Funny Marco, an internet-famous comedian with millions of followers on TikTok and Instagram.

"He had over 4 million followers at the time, and I only had 500,000. I was like, 'He’s not going to see this.' But he replied, like, a second later," she shared. "... Our video together got so many views."

Their joint clips went viral several times over, earning a cumulative 70 million views, but it was her next interview on the podcast that would make her a memorable name.

The internet star confessed she found the courage to ask Drake to come onto her podcast after he followed her on Instagram and liked a few of her videos. 

Within two days, she was on her way to Memphis in the United States to meet with the rapper.

She called the fame that followed the interview her "Alix Earle Moment".

"As someone who’s been on social media for a while, I always hoped that it was going to take off. I call it 'my Alix Earle moment.' I never knew what it would feel like," she told Cosmopolitan. 

"I thought I was just going to be doing things the same as usual, but my life has changed in so many ways because of that interview. I used to get recognised by my [mumfluencer fans] who loved my mum parodies. But it’s completely changed. 

"It's weird having so many people know who I am. My exposure is much bigger."

With more attention, though, came a whole lot of rumours. Althoff was accused of being a nepo baby who abused her connections to make her famous. It was also alleged she was an industry plant (meaning a celebrity who found fame through a company backing her).

"I could not be further from someone with connections and with money. People are like, 'Her dad had connections with Snoop Dogg.' My dad was a handyman," she recalled. 

The 'connection' with Snoop Dogg was that her contractor dad worked on the house of the rapper's neighbour.

"I was so embarrassed by how broke my family was growing up. In high school, everyone had nice cars, and my family’s cars were always getting repossessed," she said.

Nonetheless, the interview between the rapper and podcaster seemed solid, but just a few days later, they both unfollowed each other. 

It was later made clear they both soft blocked one another when she went to a Drake concert and recorded herself standing there, looking unimpressed.

"Really in my element here @ this guys concert," she wrote in the caption of the video, which received more than 25.7 million views. 

Just a day later, the interview with the rapper was pulled from both YouTube and Spotify, and clips of their chat were also removed from TikTok.

Althoff was then accused of using black culture to make a profit, particularly by using black women in her videos whilst at a Drake concert.

"She’s always around black people looking bored/uncomfortable, why engage in things that you don't like? I’m gonna say it if you guys don’t, she looks down on this culture while profiting off it," wrote one X user (formerly Twitter).

Althoff only angered viewers more when she filmed herself at a strip club with dancers moving around her while she had her arms crossed.

"My biggest issue with Bobbi is not her dry humour, it’s her insistence on making a career out of being in spaces she thinks she’s too good for," another observer wrote while someone else pleaded, "Please cancel her already. I’m tired."

However, Althoff has remained unfazed. In fact, she hasn't addressed any of the criticism, or the rumours alleging why she and Drake stopped following each other.

We did get some form of explanation in June, though, when she posted another interview with rapper Lil Yachty.

The two joked about being young parents, fame and their careers. In the middle of the interview, Drake even called Lil Yachty and shouted hello to Althoff, thus squashing the beef rumours.

In August, she interviewed Mark Cuban.

She confessed her podcast popping off felt "crazy".

"I always wanted it to blow up obviously, you hope for something but it's crazy when it actually happens," she said.
