Instagram users are very angry after the Instagram feed drastically changed overnight.

Oh.

Instagram briefly rolled out a new horizontal design today and everybody lost their minds.

The brief update saw the Instagram feed change to a design similar to Instagram stories, which saw users having to tap the screen to move to the next post rather than scrolling through the feed as usual.

Honestly, the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” has never been more relevant.

Back in October, TechCrunch revealed the social media platform were testing the tap-to-advance feed, however the new change came unexpectedly to users this morning.

Speaking to the New York Times, a spokesperson for Instagram assured that the sudden change was a mistake.

“Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today,” the spokesperson said.

“We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologise for any confusion.”

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri also apologised to users on Twitter, sharing that the update test was not supposed to reach so many users.

The update, which was sent to a number of iPhone users, has since been reversed.

Despite only being live for a few hours, it’s fair to say Twitter users were furious, with #InstagramUpdate soon trending on the platform.

I HATE the new @instagram . I am now forced to go through every image of a swipe as well as ads. That line at the top makes me even want to give up scrolling. Why are they always playing with things that people like?

While it’s been hinted that Instagram could still bring the horizontal feed back, it seems these angry responses might lead Instagram to think twice before bringing tap-to-advance to the feed.

Now, could Instagram just please bring the chronological feed back? Thanks.

All I’m saying is if Instagram can undo an update that quickly after they realised people weren’t happy about it, I know for damn sure they can give me a chronological TL by the end of the day
