What the hell is face gloss, and do you really need it in your makeup bag?

Once upon a time, the only ‘gloss’ going anywhere near our face was destined for our lips. Now, there’s a new glossy product getting makeup junkies in a tizz, only this time it’s designed for the rest of your face.

Yes, ‘face gloss’ is having a moment. And we should let it happen, because everyone deserves a little spotlight once in a while. But what is this new kid on the block going to do for you if you invite it home for a little one-on-one time?

Essentially, face gloss is applied in the same way you would a highlighter — that is, to the high points of your face, like your cheekbones and the bridge of the nose, in order to catch the light as you move. This gives your skin a healthy illumination and is perfect for girls who like the dewy, fresh faced look.

In its online dating product profile, face gloss claims to refresh tired skin and brighten a dull complexion. It can also help retain moisture in the skin, depending on the formulation — I would opt for a silicon-free version for this — and gives your finished makeup look a bit of extra lustre.

Face glosses are generally made from a silicon base, which can feel a little sticky at first, but will dry to leave a velvety finish on the skin. However, silicon-free versions are also available.

You can use them over freshly-cleansed skin for a very natural look, or over liquid foundation. Generally, I would steer clear of using a face gloss over powder-based products unless you're a fan of balling, peeling makeup. The two formulations just don't mix well.

It's also worth mentioning that this is a trend perhaps best left to those whose skin isn't particularly oily; the formulations and finish of the products can make your skin look even oilier.

For anyone with normal to dry skin, though, gloss is also one of those awesome multi-use products that's got your back when you need it. When worn alone on your eyelids, teamed with black mascara. it created a minimalist, modern look (as you can see in the photo above). You can also mix your face gloss in with regular eyeshadows to create a 'wet' look.

If you happen to get stuck, your face gloss can help you out in the lip gloss department, as well as helping to smooth any fly away hairs. Now that's value for money.
