HOLLY WAINWRIGHT: So, what did you do yesterday?

I got up at 6.30 and went for a walk. Got ready for work: shower, hair, some make-up. Filmed, edited, uploaded a couple of social videos for MID before I left the hotel I'm staying at for two nights this week.

Came to work, planned and recorded three episodes of Mamamia Out Loud with Jessie, Em and the team. Filmed some social promo for the shows. Looked at some newsletter stats and started this one. Left the office at 5.30pm to get a massage on a very sore neck… Picked up some sushi and a zero-alc beer, called Brent, Tuna and the kids and got back to work in hotel room prepping for a meeting and an interview until bed around 10 with a memoir I'm reading and a cup of chamomile tea. Lights out at 11.

Watch Em on Mamamia Out Loud, discussing the new trend of 'rage rituals'. Post continues below.

That was my yesterday. A different yesterday would have looked another way. A day at home, juggling kids and washing and meals and dog walking. A day off in the garden, brekkie or wine with friends, a day writing the book whose deadline is looming, a day travelling for work…

But this particular yesterday is what we're talking about, and yes, it's probably pretty telling about my average Tuesday.

Why am I telling you this? Well, I've just discovered a not-new but very good comedy podcast called What Did You Do Yesterday, hosted by Max Rushden (English journo and host who lives in Melbourne) and David O'Doherty (Irish comedian, writer, actor). They get famous people on and go through, in excruciating but hilarious detail, what they did yesterday. Sounds simple, is fascinating.

The show inspired me to ask Jessie and Em for detailed descriptions of their Sundays, and subscribers can find that episode here (spoiler: one of them involved a 9pm date, one did not):

And then I decided to ask the Outlouders. And look, their days were every bit as revealing, in the mundane and the extraordinary, as anyone's. Here are some highlights from a random Monday in Outlouders' world:

  • Cried in the closet at work.

  • Went on a Tinder date that turned spicy at 5pm.

  • Went to work from 6:45 am until 8:30pm. Got a magnum ice cream at the servo on the way home.

  • Walked 23,500 steps around beautiful, chill Kyoto.

  • Went to hospital. Had an ovary and fallopian tube removed.

  • Took my mat leave self to the park with baby, blanket and new friends.

  • Sat on the lounge and worked all day.

  • Answered about a million questions from friends, family and coworkers.

  • Cared for post-surgery dog. Cared for chronically ill teenager.

  • Spent the day trying not to vomit from first trimester morning sickness.

  • Tried a new recipe - creamy garlic prawns. Helped my boys dig a bike jump.

  • Submitted my uni psychology lab report.

  • Drove around a lot, drinking lots of coffee and listening to MMOL.

  • Ate noodles for dinner while watching The Block.

  • I woke up with the 5am alarm and did yoga, woke my kids and headed to work where I supported Year 12 students from 8-3.

  • Went to an over 60's aqua class.

  • Looked after my 5-month-old. Cared for my mum after knee surgery. Washed and folded eight loads of laundry.

Is it the writer in me, who finds the minutiae of other people's lives so fascinating? Or is it interesting for all of us, to see our similarities and differences playing out in the things we choose to do and have to do on an average Monday?

You can go and read the full list of what Outlouders got up over in the Facebook group. But also, tell me, what did you do yesterday?
