The new cool-girl accessory isn't an accessory at all.

The Cannes red carpet might be known for attention-grabbing gowns, but we can't help but notice what's happening with the hair.

If you need more proof we're on the cusp of a major fringe revival, let Jennifer Lawrence be the one to finally convince you.

Mamamia.

The darling of this year's celeb-packed festival is the latest A-lister to jump on the trend for middle-parted bangs. At the photocall for her new film with Robert Pattinson, Die, My Love, her wispy fringe complimented the gauzy layers of her Dior outfit.

Two more well-known proprietors of the centre-parted style have also touched down in Cannes — Dakota Johnson and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Both stars attended Kering's Women in Motion Awards, their hair a perfect encapsulation of the style that's been dubbed 'Birkin Bangs'. And it couldn't be more fitting seeing all this fringe action play out against a backdrop of the French Riviera.

No, the accessory du jour is not a Birkin Bag — it's a Birkin Bang.

The name is, of course, a reference to the late French actress Jane Birkin, who spent plenty of time soaking up the sun in the glamorous setting throughout her life.

And while her effortlessly French style is well documented, her iconic haircut has been just as influential, forming the blueprint for the 'cool-girl cut' many aspire to today.

Anne Hathaway is a recent convert of the Birkin Bang, and it's the signature style of some of the biggest names in entertainment right now, from Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega to Aimee Lou Wood.

But the fringe-as-accessory is not a new phenomenon. It-girls have been using this styling trick for decades — think Marianne Faithful, Brigitte Bardot and Stevie Nicks, whose shaggy textured bangs are synonymous with their look.

It's a legacy carried forward by musical muses Suki Waterhouse and Florence Welch. And what do all these women have in common? Impeccably cool personal style. There's no doubt a fringe brings a certain je ne sais quoi.

If slick buns and scraped-back ponies were the epitome of chic in the 'clean-girl' era, the fringe is their effortless counterpart. Which might explain why bangs are having a moment now, as fashion leans into more of an undone, bohemian era.

Instagram's fringe-cutting queen, Los Angeles-based hairstylist Jayne Matthews, has 587k followers that she educates and empowers to snip their own strands at home.

In a recent post, she explained why Birkin Bangs are such an accessible style.

"NOT the bangs you had when you were five," she shared in the caption.

"The razor makes them soft, graze effortlessly around your eyes and cheekbones, and grow out into longer swoopy curtain bangs that eventually you can easily just tuck behind your ear. These bangs are the gift that keeps giving."

So if you've been considering a cut, now might be the time. Chop chop!
