'The "Wednesday Waffle" is the one hack that saved my friendship group.'

My friendship group consists of yappers. Think of three girls getting overexcited and accidentally interrupting each other with tangents whenever someone's telling a story, and you get the picture.

Living in the same city was great. We'd see each other at work and then go for dinner during the week and brunch on the weekend. But that all changed when one of the girls packed up and moved halfway across the world to London.

Don't get me wrong, we were so excited for her — a bit jealous even. But what did it mean for our friendship?

Staying in touch with friends can be difficult at the best of times. Let alone when there's an 11-hour time difference.

Enter the Wednesday Waffle.

One of the girls got the idea from another friend who discovered the concept on TikTok. Coined by Zachary Perez, the friendship hack is simple. You record a video about your week and send it in the group chat. Everything is fair game; from work wins to bad first dates and even the tiny moments that irritate you throughout the week.

Zachary said he decided to share the concept online after showing his partner one of his friend's videos.

"She was really blown away by the fact that we'd been sending these Wednesday waffles to each other every Wednesday for a couple of years. She just thought it was a great thing to do to stay connected and it made me think about it," he said in a viral video.

"I think there's room for it and it keeps you connected more so than sending texts back and forth."

For us, it's in the form of voice notes. Every Wednesday (okay, it's sometimes Thursday), we recap the week just gone and take each other through our days — the mundane and exciting. We also send accompanying images to help put faces to names and show off the yummy dinner we had or cute bar we went to.

It's such a simple idea but it's really been a game-changer for my friends. Wednesday Waffle takes the pressure off things and, to be honest, I feel like our friendships are stronger for it.

Almost everyone is accessible nowadays. I mean, who doesn't have their phone on them almost all the time? But maintaining friendships can still be hard. I know I'm definitely guilty of seeing a notification pop up and thinking, "I'll reply later" only to accidentally let it slip by the wayside for hours.

Sometimes I mean to call a friend back home or my parents on the weekend and then forget and the next thing I know a few weeks have gone by. They're not good habits, I know, but between managing work, exercise, family, relationships, solo time and other friends, it's easy to forget to reply to the group chat sometimes.

The Wednesday Waffle is a more flexible way to meet your friends where they are and helps us stay connected with friends across time zones. And honestly, it's one of my favourite parts of the week. I love putting my headphones on and pressing play to hear, "Hey guys" as my friends yap away about their week. The background noise of a partner chiming in or an airport loudspeaker announcement only adds to the atmosphere.

I know the key players in their lives and the major, and not so important, moments. It feels like we're together even when we're thousands of kilometres away, and until we're all face-to-face again, I'll take what I can get.

And, in exciting news, the creator of the Wednesday Waffle, Zachary Perez has created an app to specifically host your Wednesday Waffles. Check it out here.
