"Can I wear this dress to a wedding?" Why the etiquette police have answered a firm 'no'.

It’s the debate we’ve heard once or twice countless times before. Though it’s a familiar one, a definitive answer is yet to be determined.

The general consensus is, you can wear white to a wedding… sometimes. It must be a certain shade of white, in a particular style, only if the bride is okay with it. But don’t ask her, because that puts her in an uncomfortable position.

So, in short, don’t wear white. We think.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the topic, this mum posted the following question to Mumsnet just to be sure she wasn’t crossing a (very vague) line:

She later added she wouldn't be at the wedding for long, perhaps just for an hour or two.

“It seems like a waste of money having to buy yet another dress that will only be worn for a few hours,” she wrote.

And the outfit in question?

The mum also admitted that, rather surprisingly, it wasn't the bride's opinion she was most concerned about.

“I don’t think the bride will mind but I’m more concerned about other guests’ opinions.”

Mumsnet users were quick to add their two cents, where most of them said her outfit choice was a clear no.

"Nice dress but sorry no. Its (sic) the wrong colour. It would actually make a really nice casual wedding dress, but which is why you can't wear it," one user wrote.

"It’s lovely in design but the colour is a bit too close to white," someone else said.

"Absolutely not. It's lovely, but not for a wedding. Just don't be that person," said another.

So the verdict is in. Apparently, for this one woman, you should steer clear from wearing white to a wedding.
