In this new twisty thriller series, beautiful people are probably lying to you.

If you're in need of a teen thriller that feels like Big Little Lies meets Pretty Little Liars with a splash of Succession, then your next weekend watch awaits.

We Were Liars is a psychological thriller series streaming on Prime Video, adapted from E. Lockhart's bestselling 2014 young adult novel of the same name.

The story centres on the privileged Sinclair family — think Taylor Swift's 'The Last Great American Dynasty' vibes — who spend their summers on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts.

They're not just rich — they are RICH rich.

The narrative follows Cadence 'Cady' Sinclair, who, after a mysterious accident that left her without her short-term memories, returns to the island determined to piece together the events of the previous summer and uncover the truth of what happened to her.

The series unfolds through Cady's perspective as she reunites with her cousins Johnny and Mirren and family friend Gat, a group of childhood friends collectively known as 'The Liars'.

As Cady's memories gradually return in flashbacks, she confronts the events that led to that fateful night, as the show explores themes of privilege, grief, addiction and family secrets.

At the heart of the series are the four 'Liars', played by Emily Alyn Lind as Cady, Shubham Maheshwari as Gat, Esther McGregor as Mirren and Joseph Zada as Johnny.

The young cast, especially Emily Alyn Lind as narrator Cady, all gave earnest and believable performances. Somehow, the four main teens come across as relatable underdogs throughout — despite their privilege — making them the sort of characters the audience wanted to root for.

But the powerhouse performances came from their mothers, the Sinclair sisters and heirs to their father's fortune, played Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer and Candice King.

These three actresses had electric chemistry together. Not only did they look the part — I can genuinely imagine them all as insufferable waspy women IRL — but they all balanced each other. Succession actress Fitzgerald, as Cady's mother, was a standout and elevated every scene she was in.

The coastal upper class aesthetic was nailed in this series. From the decor to the wardrobe choices, We Were Liars builds a world where summer lasts forever on this isolated island of beautiful people — it was part fever dream, part vision board and part '00s music video.

The subject matter was dark and moody but visually upbeat, so it felt similar to teen shows Pretty Little Liars and Cruel Summer but seen through the affluent lens of Big Little Lies or Succession.

Is it the perfect show? There could have been some tweaks. The relationship at the heart of the series — between Cady and Gat — could have delved a little deeper. Lind brought a lot of energy to her role as Cady. On the flip-side, the series is Maheshwari's first on-screen acting role and while he brings a boyish innocence to Gat, he doesn't quite deliver enough raw emotion.

They had physical chemistry, but I wasn't always fully immersed in their scenes together because it didn't always feel like both actors were operating at their best.

A few episodes took some unnecessary twists that didn't add to the overall narrative, instead echoing tropes from other teen thrillers and TV mysteries.

Some of the character development was unearned. In particular, the relationship between Esther McGregor (yes, Ewan McGregor's daughter) as Mirren and her mother Bess, played by Candice King, felt muddled. Bess' chaotic and cruel treatment of her daughter didn't always add up.

The series' focus on white privilege started to feel repetitive as the drama continued, but despite focusing so heavily on this theme, the commentary never went beyond surface-level discourse.

Despite some flaws, it's hard not to get swept up in this coastal mystery that immerses the viewer in this privileged world of linen tablecloths, beachside mega-mansions, tailored pastel suits and floral designer sundresses.

Will you want to binge it all in one day? Big yes. In the case of Were Were Liars, who cares about the truth when the lies are much more fun?
