Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield's new rom-com is going to kill us. And probably her.

When the first official trailer for Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh's new film We Live In Time was released, a collective gasp was heard around the world.

We are SO back. In fact, this might be the most back we've ever been. What am I talking about? I'm talking about the return of a niche cinematic genre known vaguely as "death trope romance movies." Think The Fault In Our Stars, Me Before You, and A Walk To Remember. In many ways, we can also include the cinematic masterpiece that is About Time.

And who could forget Anne Hathaway's film One Day, a tale that recently resurfaced thanks to the new television series of the same name. The love story of Emma and Dexter skyrocketed to number one on Netflix, with viewers calling for more projects like this.

It seems the people yearn for sad love stories. And Pugh and Garfield are prepared to serve us devastating romance on a silver platter in We Live In Time.

What is We Live In Time about?

Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) are brought together by a surprise encounter that changes their lives: she runs him over with her car. Talk about a meet-cute.

Through a series of snapshots of their life together — falling in love, staring longingly across rooms at each other, becoming a family — a shocking truth is revealed. As shown in the first trailer, Almut is diagnosed with an illness that threatens her life.

"As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley's decade-spanning, deeply moving romance," the synopsis reads.

The stars hint at steamy scenes (with a funny twist).

However, it's not just the tear-jerking romance that has people talking. Garfield recently revealed some behind-the-scenes moments that left even the crew flustered.

During an event in New York, Garfield dished on one particularly passionate sex scene with Pugh, noting that the scene went on much longer than rehearsed.

"We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene, and it's a closed set, which means it's only me and Florence in the room together and the camera operator … A lovely man called Stuart," Garfield began.

"He's very, very polite and very sweet and gentle. The director's in another room next door. And so the scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it."

Is there a trailer for We Live In Time?

There's no time like the past, present, and future. That's the message we're delivered in the first trailer, released on July 11, which offers up glimpses of what is sure to be a heartbreaking, sob-inducing love story.

"There’s something mummy and I want to talk to you about," Garfield’s character tells their daughter in the opening moments of the trailer, followed by Pugh adding "It's a bit serious though."

With montages of their lives passing by, interspersed with snippets of gut-wrenching dialogue - Pugh's delivery of "I can't bear the thought of being forgotten" will haunt my dreams - fans were, understandably, left in tears thanks to the trailer.

Where can you watch We Live In Time in Australia?

We Live In Time will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024. And, as evidenced by an incredible and slightly chaotic press tour, it has hit screens in the US and UK already.

But it won't be in Australian cinemas until January 29, 2025. Sad!
