"I have nothing to wear!"

Sound familiar?

No matter how many pairs of jeans or shoes you have stuffed into your closet, sometimes it can feel like your wardrobe is filled exclusively with ill-fitting, not-quite-right, that-top-doesn't-suit-me-anymore everything.

Trust me, I've been there.

Over the years, I've found a few easy ways to get the most out of the clothes I already have — plus a few simple additions to make when you're ready to refresh.

Here are my go-to ways to reinvigorate your wardrobe next time you find yourself with nothing to wear and hating everything you own.

Cull your closet

I'm sorry it isn't sexy, but I promise it works.

There's a reason Steve Jobs wore the same black turtleneck and blue jeans every day. One of the reasons it can be a seemingly endless hurdle to put together an outfit is decision paralysis.

Now, I'm not saying you need to strip everything back to exactly one outfit, but I am a firm believer in the power of a thorough closet clean-out. Because half the time, the problem isn't that you don't have anything you like, it's that you just can't find your favourite pieces when they're buried between a bunch of clothes that no longer serve a purpose in your life.

So say it with me: cull, cull, cull.

Go through each section and be ruthless. If there are a few pieces you're on the fence about, challenge yourself to wear them in the next month to see if they can make the cut. Otherwise if you haven't worn an item in the last 12 months and can't see yourself reaching for it anytime soon, it's time to give it a second life elsewhere.

Seek out secondhand

Speaking of second lives, eBay is the place to buy those pre-loved pieces. But not only that, it's also where you can rediscover your fashion identity.

It's an absolute treasure trove with a huge selection of pre-loved items from all your favourite local and global brands. Plus, it's all backed by buyer protections like eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, ensuring your purchases are secure.

Whether you're hunting for statement pieces or something a little more timeless, eBay offers standout style options at a range of price points.

It's also simple to list your own items, giving them a new lease on life in someone else's wardrobe while creating space for something new in your own.

Shopping and selling pre-loved on eBay is a smart, sustainable way to refresh your style and embrace fashion that fits you. So next time you have a gap in your wardrobe, head to eBay to find the missing piece in your wardrobe puzzle.

Practice "playering"

Look, I don't know if this is a real term, but it's one I use anyway. "Playering" is the portmanteau I lean on to describe "playful layering" and it's saved me so many times when I was at odds with my wardrobe.

And I'm not talking about layers simply for utility, although that is important of course. I'm talking about getting a little creative (sometimes even whimsical) with how you present your clothes.

Playering your clothes can make you feel like you're wearing a whole new outfit even if you've owned the items for years.

The best part though is that it's really easy to achieve. A simple roll of the sleeves to reveal a colourful base layer underneath creates impact and intentionality. Wearing a low-neck jumper over a turtleneck is an easy way to add a point of interest. And the same goes for a pop of colour in the sock department.

Follow a formula

Outfit formulas are an easy way to take the guesswork out of getting dressed. If you're not familiar with the concept, it's essentially just a recipe for getting dressed that you know works for you, so you can return to it time and time again when you're stuck (or even when you're not).

My current winter outfit formulas are:

  • A turtleneck base layer, button-up long sleeve shirt over the top with relaxed jeans, a belt and loafers.

  • A turtleneck base, floaty long dress over the top with a structured jacket and black lace-up shoes.

  • My denim "suit" with different shirts underneath.

So figure out your formulas and rinse and repeat to ensure you feel polished, put together and most importantly, like yourself.

Get steamy

Your clothes aren't ugly, you just need a garment steamer. I'm serious.

I can't tell you how many times I've thought all my clothes were foul but then I steamed a few things and suddenly my suffocating sartorial sadness left my body.

So, I guess my grandma was right — my clothes do look better when they're properly pressed. And I'm more likely to reach for (and feel good in) clothes when they aren't a wrinkly mess.

So, pop on a podcast and give your garments the TLC they deserve — you'll thank yourself later when it's time to get dressed.
