This is how to tell a story with no words at all.

Welcome to Mamamia’s art endeavour, the Voulez-Vous Project. Every week we celebrate emerging artists, designers, illustrators, creators and women who knit using their vaginas. (Kidding. Maybe.)

The aim: to make the internet a slightly more beautiful, captivating, or thought-provoking place. To find out more about the Voulez-Vous project, click here.

This week’s featured artist is ‘Monday’. Monday is a Perth-based artist who in inspired by folk talks and mythology. She uses pens and watercolours to create her works; illustrations and portraits, which have quite distinct styles.

“Growing up I was quiet shy and spent a lot of time with animals, reading fairy tales and drawing the flowers in my mother’s garden,” she explains. “So a fair bit of my subject matter comes from that. I was introduced to art nouveau and anime when I first tried my hand at drawing figures and that stylisation of the female form seems to have stuck with me ever since.”

Monday says that she tries to create work that is open to interpretation, but does work to silently convey a story.

“I used to do ballet and have always been fascinated by the idea of silently conveying a story through the movement of the body and looks alone,” she says. “I try to transfer this concept to my work, using the facial expressions and poses of my figures to create the subtle emotions needed for my stories.”

To see more of Monday’s work (or even look into purchasing a piece!) you can visit her website, find her on Facebook, or follow her on Instagram at @mondaysfish.
