This week Mamamia is featuring Belinda Stanton, a ceramic artist who makes sculptures and household items alike featuring cute, quirky characters.

Belinda works part-time as a graphic designer and was always drawn to the visual arts, painting canvases on the side. But then one day three years ago, while showing her kids how to play around with clay, something clicked – and ceramics have been her obsession since.

As to where she gets her inspiration, Belinda says, “The quirky characters come from pure childhood imagination. There’s a strong sense of play in my ceramic work. I was always a big fan of children’s books like Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.”

“I have always been known to ‘paint myself into a good mood’, and making 3D work literally provides me with smiling physical creatures to console my woes,” she continues. “My sculptures often have closed eyes which send my thoughts back to day-dreaming and inner peace.”

All of Belinda’s pieces are handmade and her electric kiln is powered by energy collected from the sun. There are no toxic glazes or colours used in their production.
