You can pinpoint Victoria Beckham's worst moment by her chosen hairstyle.

When it comes to the '90s, two hairstyles defined the era: Jennifer 'The Rachel' Aniston's whispy layered look in Friends and Victoria Beckham's bob.

But as seen in the new Netflix documentary Victoria Beckham, the designer embraced many more hairstyles beyond her iconic bob — in fact, she practically attempted every hair hue and cut imaginable.

"People always say, 'Do you cringe?' And I say, 'Not at all.'— Everybody changes," Beckham reflected to Time Magazine in 2009.

"I love changing my style, my hair, my makeup, and everything I've done in the past has made me what I am now. Not everyone is going to like what I do, but I look back at everything, and it makes me smile."

This isn't to say that the 51-year-old former Spice Girl doesn't have a laugh over some of her past choices. Recently on TikTok, she made fun of her wide variety of hairstyles, colours and cuts over the years.

It turns out, she approved of her Posh Spice bob and a brunette pixie cut with a simple "Yes." She was undecided on her long locks with blonde streaks from the early '00s as "50-50."

But her blonde, cropped cut with a straight side fringe and an asymmetrical chin-length dirty blonde bob were a hard "absolutely not" or "100 percent no."

As I was watching Victoria Beckham, it struck me that during the former pop star's most difficult moments, she had some of her most questionable hair. So, what better time to take a walk down memory lane through Victoria's most iconic hairstyles? Let's start from the beginning.

1996: Spice Girls domination.

This is a bit cute! The Spice Girls formed in 1994, released their breakout single 'Wannabe' in 1996 and quickly became the biggest music act the world had ever seen. Their debut album Spice would go on to sell over 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a female group in music history.

As Victoria was on top of the world (and the charts), her hair began with her trademark sharp brunette bob — perfectly encapsulating her Posh Spice persona.

1998: Victoria and David become a power couple.

The biggest power couple the world has ever seen is here. Victoria and David met in 1997, were engaged by 1998 and married in 1999. During this time, their hair started to look freakishly similar to each other, as Victoria opted for a short, spiked 'do with the obligatory two front strands (it was the '90s after all).

Did David copy Victoria or was it the other way around? Who can say, but it seems couples who get matching haircuts together do stay together.

2000: The Spice Girls are falling apart.

Geri left the group in 1998 and the following years weren't what they used to be, with rumours of infighting through 1999 and 2000 before the group officially disbanded in 2001.

This was a time of rebellion for Victoria, who swapped her signature short hair for a much longer, more voluminous mid-length cut.

This period of turmoil is reflected by her slightly confused hair — it's nice, but doesn't have the punch of her shorter styles.

2001: Victoria Beckham's solo career stumble.

Oh no. This is not good. Not good at all.

With her girl group over, Beckham released four solo singles between 2000 and 2001, which all charted high, but her debut album failed to equal the success of her fellow Spice Girls' records.

And with that solo launch came Beckham's most bizarre hair to date: strippy, long locks often worn under a bandana. The horror. At the time, hip-hop was influencing culture in a big way, but this vibe didn't feel authentic to Vicky's taste.

2003: Victoria Beckham embraces her WAG persona.

After a failed solo career, Victoria spent the following few years not sure what she should be doing. She quickly became known as a 'WAG', as she frequented her husband's David's football games, and her hair reflected that era: she got honey highlights and wore her hair in large barrel curls, like well… every other WAG.

2005: Victoria tries to salvage her life after David is caught up in a cheating scandal.

Then came the couple's biggest controversy to date.

In April 2004, the British tabloid News of the World published a story alleging that David had an affair with his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, in Madrid in 2003. David publicly denied the claims at the time.

This was a huge media controversy that put intense scrutiny on the couple. In the year that followed, Victoria's hair went a lot darker and subdued to reflect this unsettled period in the couple's marriage, suggesting that Victoria didn't want any added attention.

Victoria later opened up about the scandal in David's 2023 Netflix docuseries. "It was probably, if I'm being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life," she said.

2006: Victoria Beckham bounces back with the iconic 'pob' haircut.

This is more like it! The Posh Spice we know and love is back in a big way: Victoria launched the hairstyle that would define the mid-noughties: the slanted bob that was short at the back and long at the front.

This was a big year for Victoria: she had her first foray into fashion, launching a denim line, dvb Style, she published a fashion advice guide, That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels, and Everything in Between, and acted as a fashion editor for the March issue of Harper's Bazaar.

2007: Living in LA, Victoria Beckham is lost without a passion.

A year before finally launching her fashion brand, Victoria had a tough year. She did a world reunion tour with the Spice Girls, but she realized that performing was no longer her passion.

She spoke about this time in her documentary when she felt like her WAG-persona was taking over when she moved to Los Angeles with her family. "I suppose I was an element of attention-seeking if I'm being completely honest," she said.

"I didn't realise at the time, but I was trying to find myself. I felt… incomplete, sad, frozen in time."

This vibe is reflected in her hair colour choice: this is the blondest she's ever gone and it was… a lot.

Victoria categorised this time as when she "didn't feel creatively fulfilled," and her style choices were a way to stay "in the conversation from Spice Girls to WAGs."

2008: Victoria Beckham launches her fashion label.

Victoria cut her hair in a chic pixie cut to reflect her more serious persona as a fashion designer.

She debuted her first collection of dresses at New York Fashion Week, earning critical acclaim and quickly establishing her credibility in the fashion industry.

2011: Victoria Beckham earns the respect of the fashion industry.

Victoria's fashion career went from strength to strength, culminating in winning the prestigious award at the British Fashion Awards in 2011, solidifying her transition from pop star to respected designer.

And suddenly, her hair is no longer stealing focus — she wants her clothes to do the talking.

2012: Victoria reunites with the Spice Girls for the London Olympics.

The next year, her brand was featured alongside iconic British fashion houses during the Olympics Closing Ceremony.

Victoria also joined the Spice Girls on stage for the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony — the last time she ever performed with the group, who have since done a world tour without her.

For the iconic Olympics performance, Victoria went full pop diva with flowing, long hair. In the next decade, Victoria kept her long tresses.

2025: Victoria Beckham releases a Netflix documentary about her life.

2024 was a big year with Victoria, as she did her biggest Paris Fashion Week show to date, plus Victoria and David celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

This brings us to 2025 with the release of her tell-all doco. Victoria still has long hair, but she has added a touch of ombre to the end.

Will we ever see another bob era? If history serves, another dramatic hair change is usually only another huge life event away.
