Victoria Beckham just gave a masterclass in damage control.

Rumblings of a family feud between Brooklyn Beckham, his wife Nicola Peltz, and the rest of the Beckham brood have been simmering since their 2022 wedding.

Then last week, private rumours of the rift spilt over into the public realm. Brooklyn shared a statement on his Instagram to share his side of the years-long tension brimming within the Beckham family.

"The narrative that my wife controls me is completely backwards. I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life," Brooklyn wrote.

More specifically, Beckham made several allegations and claims about his mother, designer and former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham.

Among his claims, he wrote that his "mum cancelled making Nicola's [wedding] dress in the eleventh hour", (the horror), said that his mum had "hijacked my first dance with my wife" by dancing "inappropriately" with him, and said she called him "evil" over seating arrangements.

He accused his mother of repeatedly inviting women from his past into their lives to make Nicola feel "uncomfortable". Some of Brooklyn's claims have been supported by an ex-girlfriend. Afton McKeith dated Brooklyn in 2017, and she has claimed to The Sun her ex was "telling the truth" in his social media post.

"Brooklyn was telling the truth in his post. It was hard for him growing up," she said. "A lot has gone on over the years. This has not just happened suddenly."

Following Brooklyn's mic-drop statement, the internet fell into three camps: people sympathising with Brooklyn's story, those who stood firmly with David and Victoria, and the rest of us who just wanted to laugh at the idea of Victoria slut-dropping during her son's wedding dance. We had fun!

In the aftermath of the dramatic reveal, the celebrity world waited with bated breath to see just how 'brand Beckham' might respond to such an attack.

The day of the statement, there were crickets from the family.

David was the first to speak out publicly — though not directly. He was asked about social media and mental health on CNBC's financial program Squawk Box.

"I have always spoken about social media and the power of social media. For the good and for the bad," David said. "Children are allowed to make mistakes, that's how they learn. So that's what I try to teach my kids."

"You have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well."

Then Victoria posted to her Instagram Stories. She didn't address the controversy, but she did post a birthday tribute to her Spice Girls' bandmate, Emma Bunton. "I love you so much!" she wrote, with a series of photos.

From a PR perspective, this is a safe way to reenter social media with a positive spin — there's nothing more positive than the 'girl power' nostalgia of the Spice Girls, a girl group who dominated both the music industry and culture at large in the late '90s, securing a legion of loyal, ride-or-die followers (me included!).

This isn't the first time the Spice Girls have suddenly popped up on our timelines during a time of crisis for one of its members — decades since they disbanded.

Back in March 2017, Melanie Brown filed for divorce from her husband of a decade, Stephen Belafonte, kicking off months of infighting between the exes over Mel B's allegations of abuse.

A few months later, Mel B shared that she was trying to get the Spice Girls back together for a tour. "I would love to get back together and do something with the Spice Girls. I'm the one who keeps on saying it," she said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in September.

"If I say it enough, maybe it will actually happen again!" The Spice Girls did eventually embark on a 13-date reunion stadium tour in 2019 — minus Posh.

Geri's husband, former Formula One boss Christian Horner, was eventually fired from Red Bull after he was accused of "inappropriate, controlling behaviour" by a female colleague, in reports which first surfaced in March 2024.

The very next month, all five members of the Spice Girls reunited to celebrate Victoria's 50th birthday in London.

And surprise, surprise! In light of the Brooklyn circus, the Spice Girls content has continued to come from Victoria.

The first personal post that Victoria shared on her Instagram grid since her son's statement was a photo with Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner and Melanie Chisholm attending Baby Spice's 50th birthday bash in the UK.

"I love you girls so much," she captioned the post.

Naturally, the comments on the post have been overwhelmingly positive. For fans of the '90s girl group that gave us 'Wannabe' and 'Spice Up Your Life', every time the gals are seen together, we can't help but be filled with warm, cosy sentiments of a more innocent time in celebrity culture.

The comments reflected the feeling the group's presence still inspires among fans. "So good to see you all together supporting each other," read one comment, repeated in slightly different words across her post.

Victoria's husband, David, added his own comment to the post, writing: "This made me happy [heart emoji], I can only imagine how the Spice Girls' fans feel."

We get it, we get it. Nothing to see here! Other than THE SPICE GIRLS being back together. Viva forever etc etc.

The final step of this meticulous PR plan? Victoria has stepped out with the full Beckham family — minus Brooklyn/Nicola, obviously — to present a united front.

The family came together in Paris for a huge honour being bestowed upon Victoria: she was awarded the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.

Basically, this is one of the country's most prestigious honours, and this 'knighthood' is only given to those who have made significant contributions to their fields.

"It's been a long road to get here and I'm so grateful to you David — my husband and my original investor," Victoria began her speech.

"Thank you to my parents and to my children for always believing in my vision. Every single person in this room has been part of my journey and I am ever grateful to every single one of you."

Obviously, Victoria specifically thanking 'every single person in this room' could be taken as a loaded comment. Along with David, her children Cruz, Romeo and Harper Beckham were standing in the audience.

The whole crew then stepped out together for Paris Couture Week — again, without the family's eldest son and his wife. But notably, Cruz and Romeo attended both events with their respective partners, Jackie Apostel and Kim Turnbull. Proving themselves to be one big, happy family (including the significant others).

It's unlikely we will ever hear in her own words what Victoria really thinks of Brooklyn's comments — but we will be paying close attention to everything that she posts in the coming weeks.

Until then, her UK fans have sent her solo single, the aptly titled 'Not Such an Innocent Girl', to the top of the charts.

Originally released in 2001, the song reached number one on the Official Singles Sales chart and the Official Download chart over the weekend, a feat that Victoria never achieved as a solo artist.

After the Spice Girls disbanded, Victoria only released one solo album before she pivoted away from music and towards starting her fashion brand, Victoria Beckham.

But to most of us, she'll always be Posh Spice. And Victoria Beckham knows that carries more weight than any scandal.

As celebs like TV host Andy Cohen, reality star Bethenny Frankel and comedian Katherine Ryan have sided publicly with Victoria and David, it's worth remembering that, given some of these claims — bad dancing and petty wedding drama — it's worth treating this saga with the seriousness it deserves.

And that's likely the approach the Beckhams are giving it, too — even if it has, temporarily, spiced up their lives.
