New York is the city to find rich 1980’s pickings (literally – sometimes you can’t move for the Escada) but also the place to pick up genuine vintage and secondhand bargains. The gals at Holiday Goddess reveal four of the best vintage stores in the Big Apple …
Cobblestones 314 East 9th Street (Between 1st and 2nd Avenue)
This is passionately picked vintage and retro, with a hat-stand to love, and an owner who cares. Owner Delanee dresses the part, and despite the small space, manages to hand-pick everything from 1980s tote bags to 1960s classics. Subway: Astor Place (6)
Resurrection 217 Mott Street, Nolita
Marc Jacobs comes here for inspiration, we hear. This is costly designer vintage of the hoochie-coochie Pucci and Gucci variety. It’s still way more affordable than catwalk, though, and these pieces (from jewellery to drop-dead dresses) are meant to last your next lifetime. Gorgeous Chanel bags. Beacon’s Closet, 88 North 11th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Cheap prices (less than a bagel) for hipster students, and lots of US designer brands too. That’s why we keep coming back to Beacon’s in Brooklyn. If you’re fed up with something in your suitcase you can easily sell it here too. We were tempted by some US$65 Marc Jacobs boots here. Website www.beaconscloset.com Subway: L train to Bedford Avenue
Encore, 1132 Madison Avenue, Upper East Side
Jimmy Choo, Burberry, Dolce et Gabbana. Armani, Chloe, Gucci. Oh yes – and Vivienne Westwood runway outfits. This is where broke models offload their gear and also where Carries on a budget do their Manolo shopping. Everything is in immaculate condition. Shoes around half new retail price.
