UK police say they know who kidnapped Madeleine McCann. 

UK police have revealed that they now believe thieves snatched Madeleine McCann from a Portuguese beach resort back in 2007, in a burglary ‘gone wrong’.

Moreover, Scotland Yard believe they know who kidnapped the British four-year-old, after identifying and analysing the phone records of three men who apparently comprised a burglary gang – who chose to prey on tourists – in Praia da Luz in 2007.

UK police believe that the thieves may have broken into the McCann’s apartment, woken Madeleine, and fled with her after the crime.

Scotland Yard have also expressed dissatisfaction with the Portuguese investigation into the case, and are frustrated by the fact they cannot make any arrests in the country. UK detectives want to arrest the men for questioning, but are unable to do so before negotiations between the two governments which will give them permission to pursue the case further within Portugal.

Melbourne police officers injured after an explosion during a house call.

One Melbourne police officer is fighting for her life, another is in a critical condition, and yet another police officer and two fire-fighters have sustained serious injuries after an explosion during a house call in Middle Park yesterday evening. The first officer sustained burns to 90% of her body.

Emergency services initially arrived at the scene at about 9.00pm, to check on a man who had threatened to self harm. That man also needed treatment for burns, and is currently under police guard in hospital.

Investigators have not yet identified what caused the explosion.

Volcano erupts on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. 

Mount Sinaburg, in Sumatra, has been erupting for months – but recent eruptions have forced further evacuations and seen 20,000 people displaced. National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, “Hot lava spewed from the volcano some 60 times, reaching up to five kilometres southeast of the crater … This outpour is the biggest we’ve seen in all the recent eruptions.”

The volcano also erupted volcanic ash, and lava flowed through pre-determined evacuation zones.

Serena Williams wins the Brisbane International.

The current world number one Serena Williams beat Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Brisbane International on Saturday – 6-4, 7-5 in 98 minutes. Williams is a favourite to win the Australian Open.

US Icebreaker on route to help the stranded ships in the Antarctic.  

The United States is sending a heavy-duty icebreaker to help the Russian ship and Chinese icebreaker currently stuck in Antarctic ice. The Chinese icebreaker previously assisted with a rescue effort to get the 52 passengers on board the Russian ship onto an Australian ship, before becoming stuck itself.

The Akademik Shokalskiy left New Zealand on November 28 – carrying scientists, ship workers and paying passengers -on a journey to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Antarctic expedition led by Australian explorer Douglas Mawson.
