weddings

There are 5 main characters at every wedding. It's not the bride or groom.

It's time we recognised who the true stars of weddings are.

I'm not talking about the bride or groom or anyone in the bridal party.

I'm talking about those few guests who give the people what they want.

By people, I mean those of us who didn't cop an invite but wanted a pervy look into what everyone was wearing, the drama that unfolded (there's always a dramatic story), and just good old-fashioned content on the day of.

To the other wedding guests, these people come across as annoying, egotistical and rude. However, to the rest of us, they're the unsung heroes.

Let me introduce you to the people I like to call… The Wedding Avengers.

Watch: How much money should you gift at a wedding? Post continues below.

The iPad Boomer.

Listen, iPads are meant to be on your lap. Yes, I know they have a camera on them, but that's honestly none of my business. As a society, we all agreed that iPads would be used like computers and nothing more… until the Boomers realised what they can do.

Now, I know what you're going to say: "Not all Boomers." I agree, but there's always one.

The one Boomer who is in every single wedding photo with their giant iPad in front of their face using it to take photos.

This iPad user is magic. They weirdly have more authority than the professional photographer and they command the room. You can't miss them with their fluro pink iPad case flapping in the wind as they get the perfect shot.

The Facebook Album Aunt.

This is the most reliable content creator of the wedding. It's the aunt that immediately posts every photo the moment it's taken.

They post at 10am showing off their dress, they post at 1pm letting their Facebook friends know that the bride is late, and they post at 8pm a photo of their fish when they wanted the steak.

You can bet these posts are accompanied by a caption that says, "My head hurts from dancing. Or maybe it was the champagne 😅. Thanks for the great night, Elain and Jim."

The TikTok Live Cousin.

This is the kid that rocks up when you say "no kids allowed."

Their parents (the bride and groom's siblings) say, "We've given him/her our phone; he/she won't make a sound."

They're right, they aren't making any noise. What they are doing, however, is live streaming your wedding for the world to see. Luckily it's from their little POV, so all we're getting are legs and background music. Still, 10/10 content and much more than what we're getting from the bride and groom.

The 'Fireball Shots' Best Man.

There's always that one friend who everyone rolls their eyes at, but the groom says something like, "He's been my mate forever; I have to invite him."

This is the guy who won't leave the dance floor. It's the guy who convinces Nana to take shots with him. It's the guy who has his shirt off (but tie still on) by 10pm.

He's not the best wedding guest, but he's the one who becomes the main character in all the stories that we outsiders hear when the wedding is discussed.

The Overly Emotional Rando.

There's always one person at every wedding who's overly emotional. And it's not about love — they just can't stand being at an event where they're not the main character, so they lean on a last resort option: crying.

It's a great strategy because it makes the other guests think, "Oh, that person is so happy!" or "They must be super close to the bride or groom." But then you learn that the red-faced, puffy-eyed individual is actually the bride's parents' occasional dog sitter. Weird.

This guest is the one who will tear up during the vows, even if they barely know the couple. They'll be the first to jump up for a standing ovation during the speeches, wiping away tears as if they're the one who just got married.

While their emotional outbursts can be a bit much, they do add a certain level of entertainment to the day. You can't help but chuckle at their antics when one of the bridesmaids rehashes the story over brunch.

Next time you find yourself at a wedding, consider this your bingo card for spotting these unforgettable heroes.

While the bride and groom may be the main event, it's these comedy-genius guests who provide the rest of us with an evening of entertainment.
