The psychology of spending.

The duo emphasised that the best way to save money is by asking yourself this one question before any purchase: Do I need it, or do I just need a dopamine hit?

They recommend sitting on a purchase for at least 24 hours (two weeks is even better) and digital window shopping on Pinterest to satisfy the browsing urge.

Timing is everything.

One of their most powerful insights? The sales calendar is your best friend.

"We have realised how often sale events are," they explained, listing the major shopping events throughout the year. They include:

  • Afterpay Day sales in March

  • Click Frenzy Mayhem in May

  • End of financial year sales in June

  • Winter sales in July

  • Afterpay Day sales in August

  • Click Frenzy main event in November

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November

  • Boxing Day sales in December.

And that's not counting end-of-season sales and brand-specific promotions. With so many sales throughout the year, there's rarely a reason to pay full price.

Two Broke Chicks' best shopping hacks.

The duo also revealed some lesser-known digital tricks for scoring deals:

Use the Google Shopping carousel.

"The Google Shopping carousel is your best friend," they explained. When searching for a specific product, the shopping carousel at the top of Google results shows multiple retailers and their pricing, making comparison shopping effortless.

Find hidden discount codes.

"Go onto your favourite brand's Instagram page and look in their tagged photos," they advised. This tactic helps you discover creators who might have current exclusive discount codes with the brand.

Check Facebook Ads Manager.

"If you go into Ads Manager and search a brand, all of their ads they have running on Facebook and Meta will pop up," they shared.

This trick can reveal promotional codes that might not be widely advertised.

Use cashback services.

"There are a lot of different cash-back services available. Alex and I have used Shop Back for years," Sal shared. By installing the extension or app, you can earn cash back on purchases from partner retailers.

In-store strategies.

The shopping experts don't limit their strategies to online-only approaches.

Try in-store, buy online.

"Every time I try something on in person, I'm always in the change room googling it before I get out to make sure that I can't get it on sale," Sal confessed.

Seek out price matching.

"So many brands price match nowadays, like David Jones just updated theirs, The Iconic does it, Myer, and Chemist Warehouse price matches."

Shop smartly for household essentials.

"Household items and cleaning products are so much cheaper from The Reject Shop versus big brand grocery stores," they advised, noting they'd spotted Bondi Sands fake tan recently for just $5.

Their go-to retailers.

Sal and Alex shared their favourite places to shop:

UNIQLO: "They're so good for capsule wardrobes. They've just dropped this collection of tracksuits and sweats. And they're amazing for basics."

Kmart, Big W and Target: "I think those are great options if you want to buy something more affordable but also size inclusive too, which I think is great about all of those brands."

eBay and Depop: "eBay is my unsung hero... I'm always getting really good deals just by putting things on my wish list and leaving them there. Nine out of 10 times I get an offer for a discount."

The rule of 30.

Finally, Sal and Alex recommend using this golden rule to inform your purchases.

"It's the rule of 30. When you look at an item, and you think, 'Would I wear this 30 times?' and the answer is yes... then you divide the cost of the item by 30."

This approach helps determine the true value of an item and whether it deserves a place in your wardrobe.
