"All of my best friendships are built off very bad decisions."

I’ve always been of the belief that there is nothing better than a good story well told.

Even if you have to suffer through a few near-death experiences just so you have a witty tale to share with people at parties, it’s always worth it in the end.

The best part about living on the edge, however, is not the fact that you get to regale perfect strangers with tales of your bravery, but that the people you survive alongside with end up being your closest allies.

Some people make friends in the schoolyard, others over a shared cup of coffee in their work kitchen. For me, I prefer to form my closest friendships right at those moments in my life where I should have taken a step back and said to myself “this is a very bad idea”.

To be frank, all of my best friendships are built off very bad decisions and it turns out that I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Recently, I caught a sneak peek screening of The Spy Who Dumped Me, which stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon as two best friends who are thrown into a spur-of-the-moment (somewhat dangerous) adventure together…and accidentally become international spies.

While none of my adventures have been quite that extreme, I instantly related to the strong bond that formed between the two women during their ordeal and the special way only they can laugh about it afterwards.

That happened with me and my friend Rachel. A few years ago I was making my way through Europe with some fellow travellers when we found ourselves needing to get from Estonia to Norway in a hurry.

There was only one available flight left for the day and even though it was with a tiny airline whose name we had never heard before, we decided to take a just take a chance and nab ourselves those last few seats.

“How bad could it be?” my travelling companion Rachel and I asked each other in a bid for reassurance.

The plane (if you could even call it that) was the size of well-endowed crate and was painted with brightly coloured slashes of paint with a red nose placed at the tip.

It was the type of contraption that wouldn't look out of place at a young child's birthday party, but probably should never have attempted to make it up into the air.

There was a brief moment where we could have turned back and hopped aboard a bus or a train or anything else that didn't resemble Rudolf the Reindeer's poor cousin, but we decided to just go for it.

Once on board we discovered that our seat-belts were about as useful as non-waterproof mascara on a rainy day and there seemed to be no flight attendants around to help us.

At one point I even made my way down to the back and found two attendants sitting on the floor and necking red wine from old bottles instead of doing silly little things like safety demonstrations.

Rachel and I had no choice but to literally hold each other into our seats until our plane landed - and our friendship has been cemented ever since.

The more I share stories like this with other women, the more I have come to realise that so many friendships are built off moments just like this.

For my colleague Polly Taylor, one of her best friendships came about thanks to a spur of the moment decision to move halfway around the world.

"I'm from London and there was a girl called Lorna who worked in the same building as me who I didn't know very well. We had some mutual friends but we hadn't hung out much," Polly said.

"We were then made redundant on the same day. I decided to move to Australia and I (half jokingly) suggested she do the same. She actually did and so we moved to the other side of the world together which seemed like a crazy idea at the time!

"We've both lived here for four years and she is now one of my best friends after we made that decision together."

For Camila Lecaros, another colleague of mine, her best friendships were formed during a wild trip through Asia with two other women who have now become like her family, thanks to a questionable decision they made to take a ride with an unknown driver.

"My friends and I were doing the whole gap year thing in Laos," she said. "Our overnight coach failed to arrive, so they sent a random guy and his sh*tty car to shuttle us between two very remote locations.

"Even though it didn't seem very safe we decided to just chance it. We were terrified during the drive and nearly died, but we escaped and once we got out of that car I have never run so fast in my life as I did upon arrival in Vientiane.

There's a myth out there that women only bond over boys and beauty, but most of us know that is not the case. We all form our closest bonds in those moments between life and death where we make questionable decisions and then make it through together.

And we wouldn't have it any other way.

The Spy Who Dumped Me will open in Australian cinemas on Thursday, August 9. The movie follows Audrey (played by Mila Kunis) and Morgan (played by Kate McKinnon), two best friends who become entangled in an international conspiracy and make the crazy decisions to become spies and save the world.
