The Today Show gave a couple who've been together for 40 years the greatest gift of all.

Julie and Noel have been together – and madly in love – for 40 years.

They have five children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. The only problem? They’ve never married.

All that changed this morning when The Today Show turned up on the couple’s doorstep as part of their ‘Knock of Love’ campaign and presented the pair with two diamond rings and $10,000 to put towards their dream wedding.

“I couldn’t take my eyes off his eyes, he has those beautiful eyes and then we met and we just had so much fun all the time,” Julie said of their four decades of love.

"Sometimes, we’re a little bit crazy...but we couldn’t stay away from each other."

Noel put marrying Julie to the top of his bucket list when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

He said having a big family was a big reason why they were never able to make it down the aisle.

"With a big family, every time you sort the finances for it, something comes up and it breaks down and it just goes on and on," he said.

Julie joked that the pair had done things "the wrong way around" by having children first.

Many who watched the segment unfold on this morning's show say the couple's obvious love for each other brought them to tears.

"We were all at home watching this with happy tears streaming down our faces," commented one viewer.

"This was so deserving what an amazing family and super special couple they deserve this and so much more well done today team (sic)," another wrote.

The couple's own children were quick to thank the Today Show team for bringing such joy to their parents.

"Absolutely so happy for my beautiful parents...thank you to the today show, what a lovely crew...can't wipe the smile off my face," wrote daughter Toni.
