Karl Stefanovic's back with a brand new team: Your first look at the Today show lineup for 2020.

When you tune into the Today show in 2020, it will look very different.

The show’s lineup for next year has been announced, with Brooke Boney the only survivor following a raft of changes to Nine’s breakfast show.

Karl Stefanovic will return to Today, after being axed at the end of 2018, and be joined by new co-host Allison Langdon.

Perth reporter Tracy Vo will take the newsreader role, former Sunday Night journalist Alex Cullen will report on sport, and Tim Davies, currently on Weekend Today, will be the new weather presenter.

Brooke Boney will remain as entertainment reporter.

Vo’s appointment confirms current newsreader Tom Steinfort’s departure. He will return to 60 Minutes in 2020.

Richard Wilkins will host Weekend Today alongside Rebecca Maddern, Jayne Azzopardi will present news with Lara Vella covering while she’s on maternity leave, and Lauren Phillips will present Weekend Today weather, Nine announced.

Sylvia Jeffreys will return to morning television as the host of Today Extra, alongside David Campbell, with Belinda Russell covering Jeffreys’ maternity leave. Sonia Kruger resigned from the role last month after eight years.

Stefanovic and Langdon replace Georgie Gardner and Deb Knight, who took the reigns at the beginning of this year.

Speaking to 9Now in November, Gardner said she was “disappointed” with the decision, but added that she had been involved in the process.

“I was consulted two weeks ago about the future direction of the Today show, and naturally I’m disappointed with the outcome,” she said.

“However, I’m very proud to have been part of an innovative and progressive programming decision – the first female hosting duo in Australian breakfast television.”

The respected journalist and presenter also touched on the immense public backlash she received during her tenure, calling it “daunting and disproportionate”.

“I have no regrets, even though the scrutiny and public discourse has been daunting and disproportionate. It’s also at times been cruel,” she said.

For the better part of 2018, the rumours of Stefanovic’s looming axing from Today dominated celebrity and entertainment headlines.

The stories came after his very public and messy divorce with his wife of 20-plus years, Cassandra Thorburn, which was followed by his controversial relationship with his now-wife, Jasmine Stefanovic (née Yarbrough). Then there was the infamous Ubergate of March 2018, in which Karl and Peter Stefanovic were caught ‘complaining’ about his then co-host, Georgie Gardner, as well as their Channel Nine bosses. Dwindling ratings followed.

By the time December 2018 rolled around, Channel Nine announced that after 13 years on the morning show, it was time for the 45-year-old to officially “step off”.

Less than a year later, his reappointment was announced. Following the announcement in November, the 45-year-old told the Sydney Morning Herald he was “as shocked about this as everyone else”.

“It’s not something that I thought would come up again. I thought my time was up, but then, when I was sounded out about it, it got me thinking.

“It’s a big job with enormous pressures and I know only too well some of those pitfalls, but it is also without question the best live TV job in Australia.”
