'There are 3 ways to figure out exactly what's missing from your wardrobe.'

Capsule wardrobes are often framed as the solution to style overwhelm. A tidy little edit of timeless pieces that all "go together."

But here's what I've learned, both personally and professionally: A capsule means nothing if it's full of clothes that don't feel like you.

You can have the so-called "essentials": the blazer, the jeans, the white shirt. But you still feel disconnected from your wardrobe. That's because most capsule advice skips the step where you get to define what matters to you

It's not about having less. It's about having what aligns.

After a major move and lifestyle shift, I found myself with a closet full of pieces that once made sense— but no longer reflected who I was becoming.

I didn't need to start from scratch, I needed clarity.

And I've seen this with so many women I work with. They don't have a shopping problem—they have a style alignment gap. And until you can name what's really missing, you'll keep buying things that don't solve the problem.

The three types of wardrobe gaps.

Forget the checklist. These are the real gaps that matter:

1. Functional gaps.

These are the practical pieces that make your wardrobe work—layers that add structure and warmth, shoes you can walk in, staples that don't fight your lifestyle.

Clue: You skip outfits you like in theory because you're missing "just one thing" to complete the look.Example: You love wide-leg pants but don't have a fitted top to balance them. Or you keep adding oversized blazers to your cart but own none that actually work with your proportions.

2. Emotional gaps.

Your clothes technically "work," but they don't energise, express, or uplift you. Think about how you want your clothes to make you feel—confident, joyful, powerful, soft, expressive.

Clue: Your wardrobe looks fine, but every outfit feels flat.

Example: You're dressed 'appropriately' for work or school pick-up, but feel invisible. You want to feel more playful, feminine, or bold but nothing in your wardrobe gives you that.

3. Style identity gaps.

This is the sneaky one. It shows up when your wardrobe reflects a version of you that no longer exists — or one that was never truly you to begin with. It's about alignment. You've evolved, but your wardrobe hasn't caught up. Do your clothes reflect who you are now: in lifestyle, values, and self-concept?

Clue: You try things on, and you see a past version of yourself.

Example: Maybe you left your corporate job, but your wardrobe is still full of 'office appropriate' pieces. Or you keep impulse buying items you see on your favourite fashion bloggers, they don't suit your actual life—or your personal style values.

What to do instead.

When your wardrobe feels off, don't start with a clear-out or a shopping list. Start by noticing what already feels right.

  1. Pull out three pieces you love wearing. What do they have in common? Is it the fit, the fabric, the feeling they give you? These clues are gold. They reflect both your emotional needs and your current identity.

  1. Write down 2–3 outfits you wish you could create. What's blocking you? A missing item? A styling gap? Or is it a belief—like "I can't pull that off" or "That's not practical for my life right now"?

  1. Notice the patterns. Are you buying more of the same "safe" pieces on repeat? Or avoiding what you actually want to wear because you're unsure how to style it—or if it's "allowed"?

This isn't about building a perfect capsule. It's about building one that feels like home. One where you see yourself reflected. One that supports the way you want to feel and the life you're living now—not the one you've outgrown.

Style clarity doesn't come from doing it all at once. It comes from tuning in, adjusting, and letting your wardrobe evolve with you.

If you're craving support with that process...this is exactly what we'll unpack together inside my upcoming virtual workshop: Stop Saying 'I Have Nothing To Wear' — a style reset for women who want more ease, more confidence—and less decision fatigue.

I'm hosting it live on May 24 Australian time and all ticket holders will get the replay, plus follow up style prompts to help the concepts really land. You can grab tickets here.
