The Spill is Mamamia's daily entertainment and pop culture podcast, and each Friday they give listeners a special treat.

In the form of TV and movie recommendations surrounding the new releases that have only just dropped onto screens.

So, since the majority of us are currently enjoying some lazy holiday days, here are all the new TV shows The Spill team recommended this year and where to watch them.

The Gilded Age.

Set in the 1880s in New York City, the series follows Marian Brook, a rural girl who moves to the city following her father’s earth. She must then try to make her way into high society and win over the family of a railroad tycoon.

All Of Us Are Dead.

A South Korean coming-of-age drama that is also a zombie apocalypse series. A high school is overrun with zombies after a failed science experiment leads to an infectious outbreak. A group of students are trapped inside and struggle to stay alive after the government cuts off all communication around them.

Inventing Anna.

Inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin and the New York magazine article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People, the series follows "Anna Delvey", as she leads New York City's elite to believe she is a wealthy German heiress. And the journalist who pieces together her story and talks to the friends she has swindled.

Joe vs. Carole.

Based on the 2020 Wondery podcast Joe Exotic: Tiger King, Joe vs. Carole tells the story of Carole Baskin and Joe 'Exotic' Schreibvogel. The show delves into the now-infamous feud between the private zoo owner and cat breeder Joe Exotic and the animal activist Carole Baskin. But unlike other versions of this story, leans more into Carole's view of events.

The Dropout.

This crime drama series takes a dramatised look at the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes, played by Amanda Seyfried who won an Emmy for the role. The series, which is based on an ABC podcast of the same name, tracks the rise and very public fall of Elizabeth Holmes, from her preteen years all the way to the moment she is exposed as a fraud.

How I Met Your Father.

A spin-off of the iconic sitcom How I Met Your Mother, this time around we're following Hilary Duff's Sophie around New York City, as she looks for love and an older version of herself (played by Kim Cattrall) recounts how she met the father of her child.

Minx.

Set in the 1970s, Minx follows a young feminist woman from Los Angeles who has to join forces with a slightly sexist publisher in order to create the first women's erotic magazine. The pair then form an unlikely alliance and friendship.

Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Girls.

When it comes to reality TV shows that really changed the game, nothing stands out in 2022 quite like Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. The series, which was created to diversify the world of professional dance,  featured 13 women who compete to become dancers for Lizzo, who also hosts the show.

The Girl From Plainville.

The Girl from Plainville looks into the events leading to the death of Conrad Roy and then his girlfriend Michelle Carter's conviction for involuntary manslaughter. Michelle Carter’s ‘texting suicide’ case has been extensively covered in the media over the years, and in this series, Elle Fanning brings the complicated character to life.

Gaslit.

Starring Julia Roberts, Gaslit is a new spin on the infamous Watergate scandal and focuses on several untold stories that happened during the historic event. The story centers on Martha Mitchell, a celebrity Arkansan socialite, and wife to President Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John N. Mitchell who was the first person to publicly call out President Nixon's involvement in Watergate.

Angelyne.

Based on the real-life story of the infamous Angelyne, the series tracks how the LA fixture rose to fame in the 1980s with billboard advertisements featuring her image. The series is also hooked on a journalist from The Hollywood Reporter trying to uncover the true identity and life story of Angelyne.

Conversations With Friends.

Based on the 2017 best-selling novel of the same name by the Irish author Sally Rooney. Conversations With Friends, kicks off when best friends and former lovers Frances and Bobbi meet sophisticated author Melissa and her actor husband Nick. Things between the new group of friends become complicated when Frances and Nick begin to have feelings for each other.

Everything I Know About Love.

This sweet British comedy-drama series is a fictionalised version of Dolly Alderton's best-selling memoir of the same name, adapted by Dolly herself. The series follows four best friends from college and high school who move into a share house in London to start their adult lives and delve into first love, sex, and friendship.

The Summer I Turned Pretty.

A dreamy teen summer romance, this series, based on the best-selling book series of the same name tells the story of a teenage girl called Belly. Belly is on her family's annual summer vacation to their family friends' beach house, where she reunites with her childhood friends, brothers Jeremiah and Conrad, and finds herself falling in love with both of them.

Chloe.

This six-part British psychological thriller series is both twisted and addictive. The series tells the story of a lonely twenty-something woman called Becky Green, who becomes obsessed with the suicide of her estranged childhood friend Chloe. Becky then goes on to create the new identity of 'Sasha' in order to infiltrate Chloe's friendship circle.

Paper Girls.

Paper Girls is a sci-fi series that follows four young girls who, while out delivering papers the morning after Halloween in 1988, who become caught up in a conflict between warring factions of time travelers. They are then sent on an adventure through time in order to save the world.

Loot.

After divorcing her mega-rich husband of 20 years, Molly Novak (played by Maya Rudolph) is left with an $87 billion settlement and changes her whole life as she learns to live in the real world again, but with a whole lot of cash.

A League Of Their Own. 

A League Of Their Own is an adaptation of the iconic 1992 film of the same name, but with all new characters and storylines. The series, set in 1943, is about the formation of a World War II-era women's professional baseball team named the Rockford Peaches.

The Sandman.

A critically acclaimed fantasy drama series based on the comic book written by Neil Gaiman. Basically, the plot is that Morpheus, the personification of dreams and one of the seven Endless, is captured in an occult ritual in 1916. Then, after being held captive for 106 years, Dream escapes and sets out to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming.

The Bear. 

The Bear was named the best new TV show of the year by multiple critics, even though it was a bit of an uncomfortable watch. In The Bear, a young chef trained in the art of fine dining has to come home to Chicago to run his family's Italian beef sandwich shop, following the suicide of his older brother. When he arrives he finds that his brother has left behind debts and a very rundown kitchen.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. 

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set a few thousand years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It all begins during a time of relative peace and then goes on to tell the story of the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Last Light.

Starring Matthew Fox and Joanne Froggatt, the series is an adaptation of Alex Scarrow's bestselling apocalyptic thriller novel of the same name. When the world is thrown into chaos and effectively shuts down, a family who are separated and in different countries must find their way back to each other.

Heartbreak High. 

A reboot of the beloved 1994 series, this year Netflix brought Heartbreak High back into our lives with an all-new cast. In this new series, student Amerie Wadia becomes a pariah at Hartley High and a map detailing the sexual exploits of the school's students is discovered on a wall. Causing chaos and friendships to break down.

Bali 2002.

The Stan Original Series Bali 2002, tells the stories of the heroes who emerged from the 2002 terrorist attacks on Bali's tourist hotspots. The series follows the stories of real-life people who were present at the events and the rescue missions that followed.

Love Triangle. 

The Stan Original Dating Series Love Triangle, from the producers of Married At First Sight, follows a group of single people who are able to text and call the potential love matches the show finds for them, but initially do not see them in real life. There are a few twists and turns along the way as the potential couples start to (maybe) fall in love.

Mammals.

Starring James Corden, Mammals is a dramedy about a chef whose world is turned upside down after he suffers a devastating loss and then discovers his wife has been cheating on him. It might sound a little bleak, but it's really a story about the reality of marriage told with a lot of humour and heart.

Colin From Accounts.

Colin From Accounts is a highly bingeable Australian comedy series created and written by real-life couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer. Set in Sydney, the story kicks off when Ashley (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall), are brought together by a car accident and an injured dog.

Willow.

A continuation of the beloved 1988 fantasy film of the same name, the Willow series picks up 17 years after Queen Bavmorda was defeated in the film. An unlikely group of six heroes must then set off on a dangerous quest to save their world.

The Flatshare. 

The Flatshare is a British six-part series based on Beth O'Leary's 2019 novel of the same name. A journalist named Tiffany agrees to time-share a bed with hospice nurse Leon after she goes through a pretty brutal breakup. The two think they'll never have to meet, but they begin to develop feelings for each other via notes.

Welcome To Chippendales.

Welcome To Chippendales is a true crime series that delves into the collapse of the male strip joint, Chippendales, in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the transformation of its owner and founder Somen "Steve" Banerjee.
