'Chad Michael Murray stars in Netflix’s sexy new rom-com and I asked him the question on everyone’s minds.'

Magic Mike can retire because Merry Mike is here. That's right, Netflix has released a Christmas movie about male strippers.

Netflix's The Merry Gentlemen has dry-humped its way into our hearts.

The Christmas movie stars Britt Robertson as Ashley, a former Broadway dancer who returns to her hometown after losing her job. When she discovers her parents' venue, the Rhythm Room, is struggling financially, she devises a plan to save it by organising an all-male Christmas-themed revue. Festive!

The film stars Chad Michael Murray as Luke, a contractor who joins the dance troupe after some initial hesitation. The supporting cast includes Beth Broderick, Michael Gross and Maxwell Caulfield.

Written by Marla Sokoloff (who also appears as Marie), the movie balances the festive charm we'd expect from any Netflix seasonal fare with unexpected dry humour, thanks in large part to Robertson.

Ahead of the film's release, I caught up with the stars — Girlboss actress Britt Robertson and teen heartthrob, Chad Michael Murray.

When I asked what makes this a different type of Christmas movie, the cast couldn't help but laugh. "A lot of shirts off," Robertson eagerly replied. "A lot of abs, a lot of dance, a lot of musical, talented individuals."

"I'd say the music for me," Murray added. "The music is incredible, the music is fantastic. I still get the stomping stuck in my head."

At this point in the interview, both actors began singing a catchy melody from the film. Watch them sing it below.

The Merry Gentlemen does feature some genuinely solid dance routines, but like Chad said, it's the music that truly gets the heart pumping. The song the two co-stars were referencing was a Vyvyan James Hope-Scott and Rick Cassman arrangement of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.'

TBH, watching these men hump chairs to this banger, I could kick a door off its hinges. The dance trio was every bit as rustic and enthusiastic as the men of Magic Mike.

Murray's role as Luke is the first time he would be shirtless for a large slab of a film. As for how he prepared for the role?

"I stopped eating for six months. That was step one," Murray replied in a sarcastic tone.

"That'll do it," Robertson joked, before clarifying that Murray was "a clean eater".

"I'm a clean eater," he agreed. "It was one of those scenarios where I knew it was going to be a lot of work, and it was something I'd never done. I was incredibly excited and a little terrified of what was ahead, but more excited than anything."

Murray was especially nervous to try his hand at some of the film's gyrating dance sequences.

"I'd never had the opportunity to do anything like this. Sitting down and working with the guys and working with our choreographer, Christine Lakin… it was an awesome group," he said.

"Then Britt comes in and brings the energy every day and crushes it. By the way, when I first saw her in rehearsal and I saw all the work that she was doing with tap, it made me step up my game even more because I was going, 'Oh man, she's gonna make me look bad.'"

Robertson wasn't having this for a moment. "I didn't make him look that bad, because no one seems to remember that I tapped in the film," she quipped, referring to the multiple shirtless men who have been stealing everyone's attention.

I will say, while the dance scenes are thrilling and the chemistry between Robertson and Murray is sizzling, there is something lacking in the rest of the film.

Despite Robertson's charming portrayal, Ashley's motivations didn't always feel authentic. Even in the beginning when she is fired from her Broadway troupe — she was genuinely a flop in it and had messed up the choreography — her outrage doesn't feel earned when she's cut.

But despite the inconsistencies, it's still an enjoyable film, and is slightly less formulaic than most Netflix Christmas movies.

"Honestly, I'm really excited for everybody to see a film that's festive, fun and outside of the box," Murray beamed.

"We're pushing the envelope a little bit but not too far to the point where you're gonna go 'What are they doing?'. Like no, no, no — I think we hit the sweet spot. We've given some joy and spread the love."

When asked what they're most excited about when viewers see this movie, Robertson quickly offered, "Just how hard Chad goes when it comes to dancing," she laughed. She isn't wrong!

"That's just life. That's par for the course," Murray sheepishly agreed. Can we get an amen?
