Oh dear! Dakota Johnson is caught in a love triangle with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

I don't know about you, but I've been spending a lot of time lately lamenting the decline in mid-budget rom-coms. No really, I wrote a whole thesis on the topic.

Romance movies with stunning production, well-written scripts (and genuinely good actors) are few and far between these days, with a preference for Hallmark-style films taking over streaming services.

So imagine my delight when the first on-set images of Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson filming in New York dropped last year. I was elated! I was intrigued! I was very annoying about the whole thing!

Now, we have an official trailer for Materialists and I have to admit, this looks like a good time. It's giving Challengers for the 30s and 40s crowd. Here's everything you need to know.

What is Materialists all about?

Materialists is a stylish, witty drama that follows the intertwined lives of three New Yorkers navigating love, ambition and the complexities of modern relationships.

Dakota Johnston stars as Lucy, a matchmaker described by her pals as an 'elusive bachelorette'. Admittedly, she only has nine successful matches… so I don't know how good she is at this whole thing.

Attending the wedding of one of her successful matches, Lucy crosses paths with two men: her own perfect match (literal handsome millionaire, played by Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (hot, poor Chris Evans). Romance, indecision, and even more romance ensue.

The film is written and directed by Celine Song, the woman who brought us the cataclysmic and devastating film Past Lives in 2023. Thankfully, this new project seems to be a little lighter in tone. While we loved Past Lives, there's no denying it was a crushing romantic drama.

Materialists, however, appears to be leaning more towards the charming side of romance. Thank god!

The trailer treats us to our first glimpse of the project, and I have to say, it has an air of classic '90s rom-com about it. It looks a little more polished and a little less ridiculous than many of the modern rom-coms we're seeing today.

Maybe it's the New York setting, maybe it's the cast, but the energy of this one feels a little more akin to the likes of You've Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping or My Best Friend's Wedding.

After watching the trailer, fans have firmly planted themselves in two camps: team rich Pedro Pascal or team poor Chris Evans. Me personally? Chris Evans all the way.

But this is an A24 film production, after all, so who knows if there's a secret tragedy waiting for us. I sincerely hope not.

Where to watch Materialists in Australia…

Materialists is set to hit cinemas later this year, and if the trailer is anything to go by, we're in for a treat of stunning New York visuals, sharp dialogue, and enough sexual tension to power a small city.

I don't know about you, but I'll be first in line with my popcorn, ready to watch these three gorgeous humans break each other's hearts for two hours.
