Everything is bigger in Texas and The Hunting Wives is proving this to be true with the erotic thriller taking the world by storm.

The drama, available to stream exclusively on Stan, is based on May Cobb's novel of the same name. Since dropping earlier this month, The Hunting Wives has captivated audiences with its delicious plot twists, ridiculous drama and sexy scenes.

The series follows Sophie O'Neil (Brittany Snow), a Boston mum who moves to a small East Texas town. Her life soon spirals into a web of secrets and murder after she falls in with a clique of wealthy, gun-toting housewives led by the enigmatic Margo Banks (Malin Akerman).

At the top of this clique is the preacher's wife Jill, played by Scandal and Inventing Anna actress, Katie Lowes.

Mamamia spoke to Lowes about the breakout success of the show, which has been a huge hit on Netflix in the US — drawing 5.2 million views in its debut week, and accumulating over 2 billion minutes of viewing time in a single week.

"I can't believe it. It's a juggernaut," Lowes said.

"We're in Los Angeles, which is a very big, busy city, so this place is crowded and I couldn't walk a foot without talking to tons of people about The Hunting Wives."

"I was on Scandal for seven years and then Inventing Anna. I've been on juggernauts before, but for some reason, it's different with a summer spicy streaming sexy show. I can't go anywhere."

With the show quickly becoming one of the buzziest new TV shows of 2025, the obvious question is: will it return for a season two?

"[The creator] Rebecca Cutter, till the end of time, could call me and tell me to be there and I would be there on the next flight," she said.

"We have no official word yet on season two, which is crazy, as the show is just building on itself more and more. I know we've been in the top 10 ranking for over a month.

"The fans are the ones telling people about it — that's the kind of stuff that the powers that be can't deny."

But the actress reckons TV execs would be silly not to get a second season going asap. "I don't want to be falsely confident until it's official, but come on!" she joked.

As soon as Lowes read the script, she knew it was something special.

"It's campy, it's theatrical, it's big, it's Texas, it's accents, it's outfits, it's guns, hunting and sex — and it wasn't shy, it wasn't nuanced, it wasn't reading between the lines."

However, Jill wasn't the role she actually went for initially.

"I originally auditioned for Callie, who's so brilliantly played by a dear friend of mine, Jaime Ray Newman. We've been friends for 20 years," she said.

Lowes sent in an audition tape for Callie, even though she suspected she was better suited to Jill. "When I read the pilot, I thought, 'Oh boy, I'm a Jill.'… about a day later, Rebecca Cutter, the showrunner, called and said, would she remake another tape for Jill?"

And the rest is history.

"I just felt in my bones that I understood her, which is scary because she's unhinged [laughs]," she said.

"Jill is always hiding her inner motives, she's the pillar of the community, her presentation is perfection, but inside she is just a crumbling, lonely mess."

The drama's conservative Southern-inspired wardrobe helped Katie step into the shoes of Jill, quite literally.

"We all flew early to Charlotte to do camera tests with the outfits, the hair and the makeup," she told us. "The minute all three came together for Jill and I walked in front of that camera, I was like possessed. It was just like a completely done deal."

Lowes has found herself attracted to these complicated women like Jill, along with her roles Scandal and Inventing Anna with Shonda Rhimes.

"I think a lesser writer would make something sort of stereotypical, but I've gotten to do Shonda Rhimes' words and I've gotten to do Rebecca Cutter's words, who are both women, and I think they know how contradictory it is to be human," she said.

The actress admits she finds herself being drawn to stories that are shaped around complicated female friendship dynamics.

"I play in that arena a lot. My female friendships from being little to college to now, they're my everything," she said.

"I don't think it's a coincidence that I'm constantly playing best friends or I'm in girl groups."

Like she has on-screen, the actress has forged close bonds with her female co-stars. "Kerry Washington, Darby Stansfield and Bellamy Young [from Scandal], we're still so tight, I can't even begin to describe our friendship," she said.

"Then Inventing Anna, I would follow the amazing Julia Garner and Laverne Cox over a cliff. I love these women. Laverne and I have dinner constantly."

The same goes for her connection with the women on The Hunting Wives.

"Brittany Snow and I are basically sisters at this point. Malin is a beacon of mentorship to me," she said.

Lowes spilled some behind-the-scenes details from filming in North Carolina which honestly, sounded like a goddamn vibe.

"We all lived in the same apartment building. Jamie Ray Newman was on my floor, Brittany was next door to me, Malin was two floors down. There was a pool in the middle — it was like Melrose Place."

"We would work all day and then when we would wrap, we'd all be at dinner or a pizza place that was across the street or a bar — these girls are fun. Nobody was a homebody."

The women in the cast frequented a honky tonk bar in Charlotte called Coyote Joe's, where they danced the night away. "Everyone was like, 'What are we doing? Our kids are in LA. Let's go make the most of our lives!'," she spilled.

"I'm all about women's friendships on TV and it's the most fun to shoot."
