'The Housemaid has announced a sequel, but there's one reason I'm not excited about it.'

Following the massive box office success of the psychological thriller The Housemaid, Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel.

From the dark corners of Freida McFadden's twisted mind, gird your goddamn lions for The Housemaid's Secret, fam.

The original film, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has already grossed an impressive $133 million ($197 million AUD) worldwide, quickly surpassing its modest budget and making a follow-up low-key inevitable.

And yep, it's happening.

Everything we know about The Housemaid sequel, The Housemaid's Secret.

Director Paul Feig is set to return alongside stars Sweeney and Michele Morrone, with production scheduled to begin later this year.

Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine is returning to pen the script, while Sweeney will continue her involvement as executive producer.

The story follows the next chapter for Millie, Sweeney's character, who has bounced back from her harrowing experience working for the wealthy Winchester family in the first film.

Director Paul Feig shared that he's stoked to be back for the sequel.

"It's been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew," Feig said. "We're lucky that [author] Freida McFadden has already extended Millie's journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences."

The sequel will adapt the second installment of McFadden's best-selling book trilogy, which has sold millions of copies and spent over a year on the New York Times bestseller list.

In the first movie, Millie (Sweeney) is a young woman with a criminal record who finds a fresh start working as a live-in maid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). However, the family's dark secrets soon turn the job into a nightmare, as Millie becomes entangled in a dangerous dynamic.

The sequel's plot finds Millie working in a high-end Manhattan penthouse for the wealthy Douglas Garrick, where she is warned never to disturb his reclusive wife, Wendy. As she uncovers the dark secrets of this family, she explores a romantic connection with Enzo, the loyal groundskeeper from the first book.

So basically, don't expect to see much of Seyfried and Skelnar's characters in the sequel. Neither of the actors were mentioned as being involved in the sequel announcement.

As a huge fan of The Housemaid, Seyfried's powerhouse performance was the movie's magical ingredient, so her chaotic presence will be sorely missed. With this in mind, I'm not that excited for the sequel.

But never fear, Seyfried hopes she can worm her way into the sequel, somehow. On the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Seyfried not only confirmed that a sequel was coming (oops!), but she 'guaranteed' that her iconic character Nina would appear in some small capacity.

"No one's said anything about No. 2, but I guarantee there will be No. 2," Seyfried told Variety.

"And I almost guarantee that I'm gonna be some small cameo in it, because it's about Syd and her working for a new family. And there's so much that happens, especially with Michele's character Enzo," she continued.

"I really wanna see how she keeps Nina Winchester in her pocket, because I will jump the f*ck back into that." Lmao. Love her.

Let's hope that, like the film adaption, there are a few changes made in the movie version of the sequel which will incorporate more of Nina's story.

Or else, I'd be here for a second sequel based around Nina's new life. We need more Amanda Seyfried on our screens and we need it now.
