Sam Armytage just told us everything you need to know about Australia's first Golden Bachelor.

The Bachelor Australia was a fan-favourite for years, producing some of Australia's most iconic reality TV romances — from Matty J and Laura Byrne to Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich. But after a while, the Channel 10 juggernaut began to drop in ratings (and romantic success) and was eventually rested in 2024.

Now, it's back. Sort of.

Channel Nine has chosen to bring another US version of the franchise to our screens this year, adapting The Golden Bachelor for the Aussie market.

And yes, this version does feature a romantic lead in their golden years. In the first season in the US in 2023, they cast a 72-year-old guy named Gerry Turner. So, who will Australia be meeting when The Golden Bachelor Australia hits our screens?

Get ready to fall in love with Barry 'Bear' Myrdon, an infrastructure engineer from Sydney.

"I think Australia's ready for a bit more Bachie and this is different," Sam Armytage told Mamamia at the 2025 Logie Awards on Sunday night.

"This is like nothing you've ever seen before. It's obviously the old heritage brand of The Bachelor, but we're bringing it forward, to the golden era."

Sam confirmed that Bear is 60 years old. And, thankfully, the women are age-appropriate.

"So the women are in their 50s and 60s, Bear is 60, so they're people who've loved before and either been widowed or divorced and are looking for love again," Sam told us.

"So, it's really hopeful. It's really lovely and it's, it's like the actual reality of dating — so it's hilarious, but it's also quite powerful, it's quite poignant, and the women are spectacular."

She calls the ladies "brilliant" and admits to being "in awe of them" on their individual quests for love.

"They're funny, they're so accomplished, they've got extraordinary stories of love and loss and happiness and children and grandchildren, and so they've really got great stories to tell. It's great, and I think Australia is gonna love it.

"It's very hopeful — I mean we wouldn't do it to be 'woe is me'. It's really hopeful because I think we all need that."

According to The Daily Mail, Bear is a father of three boys who are keen for him to find a new kind of partner.

"Bear is always complaining that his boys are saying that he is bringing around the wrong kind of girls that are just too young and hot for him," a source revealed.

"We were always saying that he needs to be put on a show like MAFS, so seeing him up for the Bachelor role is no surprise."

We can't wait to see what unfolds on screen when The Golden Bachelor premieres later this year. Stay tuned for more updates!
