Mat, Robbie and the 'crazy idea' that could win them The Block.

Mat and Robby have become instant faves on The Block 2025, beloved for both their renovation inexperience and their silly antics on the reality show.

Mat is a 41-year-old hairdresser and former elite figure skater, while Robby is a 37-year-old barber and ex-NPL soccer player. Both business owners, the duo met 15 years ago at a barber's shop, and the rest is history.

The besties from Adelaide are the greenest renovators in the line-up — they've never renovated a home before. Robby applied for the show despite Mat never even watching The Block.

"I was sitting at home and my partner Alyssa said myself and Mat would be great on The Block and here we are," Rob told 9Entertainment.

Mat added, "If someone had told me with a crystal ball the likelihood of going on The Block or my house burning down, I would have said our house burning down."

Who are The Block's Mat and Robby?

The pair's wholesome friendship is set to win over The Block fans. "We are just two best mates, a hairdresser and a barber, a gay and a straight. I think a lot of people will connect with us really well," they told New Idea.

The longtime friends believe they were cast on the show for their personalities, rather than their renovation skills.

"It's who we are," Mat said. "I think that's why we're on the show. We didn't get on the show because of our ability to be able to renovate. We make people laugh. We enjoyed the process."

They hope their lack of renovation experience won't hold them back. "We're definitely not from the building or design world, but we're quick learners, full of big ideas, so let's hope we adapt and learn some new skills and make some new friends along the way," they told TV WEEK.

Robby is leaving behind his partner, Alyssa, and his newborn son, Brooks, to do the show.

"When I left to go on The Block, leaving him was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do," Robby told New Idea.

"When the show started, Brooks was only four months old. Leaving my partner Alyssa, a brand-new mum, was by far the hardest decision — knowing I wouldn't be there to help during those early, exhausting months," he said in another chat with TV Week.

What have Mat and Robby said about filming the show?

As far as their edit on the show, the duo are confident they won't cop the dreaded 'villain edit'.

"We're not the type to gossip, stir drama or get caught up in any of the nonsense — so we're pretty confident we'll steer clear of any 'villain' labels," they told TV Week.

"We're just here to have a good laugh every day and make the most of the experience."

In fact, they claim that all the teams got along like a house on fire (pardon the pun).

"We formed such good friendships, we really supported each other and looked after each other," they told New Idea.

Mat and Robby's 'crazy' idea for their house on The Block.

Mat and Robby might be new to renovating, but they immediately threw a spanner in the works by wanting to do something totally different to their house.

They pitched a bold plan to add a wine cellar under their home. Their "crazy idea" is to create an in-ground wine cellar by dropping a shipping container into their backyard — a unique concept requiring a structural engineer's sign-off, plus surveyor and council approval.

As Mat and Robby explained on episode two, this ambitious idea is their way of standing out, given that all the houses this season have the same floor plan.

"We want to stand out for buyers," Robby said.

Could this rogue idea win them the show, and will they pull this off? By the end of episode two, the pair had already secured two of three critical approvals and were awaiting council sign-off before digging could begin.

Either way, it's a costly risk that could take up to $100,000 from the budget. "If we spend money on the cellar and don't win anything, we are just going to end up with a big mud hole," Robby quipped in the episode.

Will this risk pay off for the boys? Stay tuned!
