"I chased down strangers to find out where they bought their amazing clothes."

Have you ever seen someone walk down the street in a killer outfit and wanted to chase them down to find out where they got it?

The other day, I did just that.

Except I’m not very fit, so instead of being approached by a poised, sane person politely inquiring about their outfit, these stylish people found themselves being chased by a red-faced stranger in a gold skirt who needed 30 seconds to get her breath back before she could even explain what she was doing.

Ah, the things we do for fashion.

The good news is it was worth it.

While designer runway shows and glossy magazines have traditionally dominated fashion, there's no denying that it's on the streets where the real style lies.

That woman in front of you in the queue at the supermarket with the electric red hair and outfit that should clash but actually just works. The man at the bus stop wearing his feather-plumed hat at just the perfect jaunty angle.

In my case, it was Anna's amazing lemon-emblazoned top, a piece that will instantly turn the most drab outfit into something special.

She bought it from Zara the other day, so it's likely still there if you get in quick. It's proof that when life (Zara) gives you lemons, you pair it with Zara pants, The Iconic sandals and Dior sunnies.

I spotted Robyn's bright patterned Leona Edminston dress from a mile away - literally. It took me a while to catch her up. On a day that was grey but humid and sticky, it was the perfect outfit in every way possible.

Thanks to restaurant manager Katie, I've learnt that when you see a dress you like but can't track down/afford, you take matters into your own hands and sew it yourself.

The only downside? I don't know how to sew, which probably explains my longing look at her adorable homemade bubblegum pink frock.

Maeline just oozed 'cool'. The nonchalantly tied jacket around her waist, headphones hanging round her neck after two strangers interrupted the song she was listening to to make her pose for photographs... you just can't fake it.

The only accessory bigger than Simona's chunky statement necklaces from Hobart's Salamanca markets was her smile. Glorious!
