6. Greens bill to stop the gender pay gap.

In Australia the gender pay gap is 17.9% that’s the highest it has been for two decades. Greens Senator Larissa Waters says it’s a “disgrace.”

“When pay is set in secret deals and employees aren’t allowed to discuss the outcome women lose out,” she said.

Private sector gag clauses often prevent workers from discussing their pay with one another.

“In my first legal job, I personally experienced being paid less than a male colleague doing the same job because our pay was set in secret.’ Senator Waters said.

“The gender pay gap is much smaller in the public sector at 12.2 per cent, where workers are allowed to talk about their pay, compared 21.3 per cent in the private sector, where these gag clauses exist.

Data collected by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) shows that where pay is set in secret, the gender pay gap is worse.

She says that by introducing the bill The Greens hope to end this widening gulf.
