Supernanny star: "Parents need to buy less gifts and be more present over the holidays."

Parenting expert, Jo Frost, the star of television series Supernanny shares her top tips for parents these holidays.

What is the biggest mistake parents make?

In today’s society they over-indulge with too many materialistic gifts and less time creating memories their kids will treasure. Parents need to give less presents and be more present over the holiday time.

What is the most common problem you come across that is easy to solve?

Sleep. Kids tend to want to stay up later and that can cause an impact, like grouchiness if they have had a lack of sleep. The answer is to extend the time, according to age and make sure toddlers and infants get the sleep they need even if it isn’t what they want.

Has there ever been a family you couldn't help?

It's my intention to help every family with the knowledge and experience I have. My hope is that they receive that education and apply to make their family life better.

What's your approach to helping families with bad behaviour?

Identify what the behaviour is, work out where it’s coming from and then change the behaviour pattern.

Jo Frost's top three tips to keeping children in line over the holidays:

  • Stick to the cornerstones of their routine but, be flexible with the overall schedule.

  • Regulate the amount of time they spend with their video games and get them out in the fresh air and light. This way they can be moving around.

  • Don’t let all your family rules fly up the chimney with Santa.

When should families ask for help?

When an issue keeps regurgitating, after efforts have been made to resolve them.

Do some kids have a naughty predisposition or is it learned behaviour?

I believe and know there are many reasons for why we see negative behaviour from children. The key is identifying why it is happening, how it can be changed, and what the positive impact will be for the family and child.
