The comedy icons from Sunny Nights told us about meeting each other for the first time.

The Stan Original series Sunny Nights is a dark dramedy that is now streaming.

The show stars The Four Seasons' star Will Forte as the strait-laced Martin Marvin and The Good Place's D'Arcy Carden as his chaos demon sister, Vicki. The quirky series is directed and executive-produced by Trent O'Donnell, who is known for his work on Hacks and Colin from Accounts.

The plot follows the American siblings who move to Sydney to set up a spray tan business, Tansform, partly so Martin can win back his estranged wife.

The siblings' grand plans soon spiral after they become entangled in Sydney's dangerous criminal underworld. The Marvins must navigate how to stay alive and out of prison — all while they keep their business afloat.

The supporting cast features Whale Rider's Rachel House, The Couple Next Door's Jessica De Gouw, former professional rugby league footballer Willie Mason in his debut role, and a special appearance from Colin From Accounts' Patrick Brammall.

Back when the series was filming in Sydney last year, Mamamia was invited to visit the set, and got to chat with the show's stars, Will Forte and D'Arcy Carden.

Forte listed his biggest highlight from filming as working with his co-star.

"I've loved getting to work with her and just getting to know her. We had a lot of friends in common, but it's been just really delightful," Forte said.

"We know all the same people and a lot of our close friends are friends, so it's actually insane. It's even weirder that we're from the same hometown. He went to the same high school as my sister," added Carden.

The two comedy actors bonded quickly on set and they've since combined into one little family.

"We have so many reasons to have met before, but this is what it took. And now I've been spending so much time with his family, and he's been spending time with my husband, and it's been a very fun," said Carden.

This easy rapport helped build the sibling bond that they reflect on screen. "It's so stupid because it has come so naturally and you couldn't fake it," Carden said.

"Since your first episode of SNL, I've been a fan of his and had heard from so many friends that he was just the best, and just found out right away that all that is true."

"That's sweet," replied Forte.

Both actors were drawn to sign on to the show due to one man at the helm. "Trent O'Donnell drew us to the project. We both worked with him before and have known him for a while. He's just the best," Forte said.

Another factor at play was the chance to film in Australia. "Neither of us has been to Australia before. Not to speak for you, but I will a little bit… we just love it here," Forte said.

"From the day we got here — jet lag and all — everybody's so welcoming and warm and it's just so beautiful here. Filming here was a huge draw."

That isn't to say they haven't found themselves a little confused by the accents, or the time they found themselves at the 2024 Logie Awards.

"I've never not been confused," Forte joked.

"We went to the Logies the other night. We were baited into doing accents a few times and one person said that I should be deported. It was a really rude accent, so she was really rude.

"But we had so much fun. It was so long… I feel like it was really loose and fun, but there was a feeling of community in that room and all the history together."

They both agree there were some noticeable differences between filming in Australia and in Los Angeles.

"The crew is as good as any crew I've ever worked with. They all seem really invested," Forte admits.

"I wonder if this is just in LA, but there is so much TV and filming happening all the time… it's such an industry town," added Carden. "People are just constantly working from one thing to the next. I feel like this crew surprised me — they all really knew the show; they knew the story, they knew the characters."

Given Forte's more straight-laced character — a departure from his typical oddball parts — he still found ways to relate to Martin.

"Even I could relate to a serial killer," Forte joked.

"It's not exactly what I'm like in real life, but each aspect I've experienced, at least once in my life. I'm not a serial killer now and I don't know that everybody's a serial killer in some way, or everybody's experienced killing serially [laughs]."

But don't expect either Forte or Carden to be qualified to give any spray tans anytime soon. "No, we didn't do a lot of research on spray tans. It was more of a story about their determination to make a better life for themselves," said Forte.

"It could have been spray tan or a number of things."

Sunny Nights is a Stan Original Series from Jungle Entertainment and Echo Lake Entertainment in association with Cineflix Rights with major production investment from Screen Australia, and financed with support from Screen NSW through the Made in NSW Fund.
