I'll be honest with you: getting bangs as an adult feels like a monumentally stupid decision about 72 hours after you've made it.

I hadn't had a fringe since I was maybe about fourteen (there are photos, they're traumatic, we don't speak of them), but something possessed me recently to march into a salon and demand bangs once again.

Maybe it was the endless scroll of perfectly fringed influencers and celebrities on my Instagram feed (I blame you, Dakota Johnson). Maybe it was a quarter life crisis. Maybe I just wanted to feel like I had my life together enough to maintain face-framing hair.

Whatever the reason, I did it and immediately had second thoughts. Because who am I kidding, I am a wake-up-and-go kind of girl. I rarely run a brush through my hair, let alone style it. I had no idea what to do with this new friend sitting on my forehead.

But then I discovered one ridiculously simple styling trick that changed everything. And now, most days, they actually look like something resembling the chic fringe I'd envisioned.

Here's my lazy girl guide to styling your bangs with minimal effort.

A large hair roller.

I have no idea how to style anything.

Whether it's with a round comb and a hairdryer or a curling iron, doing my hair has always been a nightmare. So, as you can imagine, manually styling bangs every day was never an option for me.

But low and behold, I have discovered the perfect lazy girl styling tool: a hair roller. It sounds simple, but if you're a lazy girl like me, it's honestly an absolute game-changer. And you barely have to do anything.

In the morning, rather than flattening my fringe with a headband while I get ready, I'll curl my fringe into the large roller (it has to be large unless you want ringlets) before going about my morning routine. I'll shower, wash my face, apply all my face products, SPF, and wait for everything to absorb — giving it plenty of time to shape my bangs. Once my forehead is dry, I'll remove the hair roller and brush out my bangs until they're less poofy.

And voila!

Without any heat styling or flat irons, my bangs are voluminous, uniform and full of shape. If you have thinner hair that doesn't hold its shape, I'd recommend sleeping with the roller or maybe running a hot hairdryer over it before removing — that'll help hold it all in place for longer.

If you take one tip from this, it's the hair roller. You won't regret it.

A fringe hairspray.

This step is optional, depending on your hair texture, but it's a great product to have handy.

I will preface this by saying that I don't do this step every day (my bangs tend to generally stay put), but if I know I'm going to be out and about, or attending an event, a hairspray is a must.

But not just any hairspray. You need a product that will retain the shape of your bangs without the crispy hardness that comes with traditional hairsprays. Because, let's be honest, no one wants crispy bangs.

My personal favourite bang hairspray is the Kao Cape 3D Extra Keep Hair Spray. It's a Japanese hairspray that strikes the perfect balance between structure and movement. One light spray over your fringe and it will not budge. Not at all, which is a miracle. But it also won't look like glossy helmet hair. I highly recommend it.

A hair powder.

I don't think any person with bangs would ever advise against some sort of hair mattifying product. Because bangs get oily and they get oily fast.

Rather than having to wash your bangs every single day, I would recommend a dry shampoo or a hair powder to help dull the shine and absorb any excess oil. I typically do this once every 2-3 days between washes, and it honestly makes a world of difference.

The Schwarzkopf Powderful Volume Powder is amazing — absorbs oil immediately and doesn't leave any white residue. I also have an old translucent face powder from Makeup Forever from years ago that works really well on hair. So, if you have any old finely-meld powders in your makeup collection and don't want to pay for new hair products, you can give that a go too.

A small boar-bristle round comb.

Finally, this may seem like a no-brainer, but invest in a good, compact comb you can carry around with you. Make sure it has a small barrel and has boar or mixed bristles — no plastic bristles here. Boar or mixed bristles tend to spread your hair's natural oils from root to tip, giving you that smooth, glossy finish while keeping frizz in check.

The day is long, and you never know when you might need to run for a train, duck under an awning when it starts bucketing down, or simply survive the humidity that is Australian weather. So carrying around a handy brush can be the saving grace against a bad hair day.

Trust me, your fringe will thank you.
